Bug report: Brave on Ubuntu crashes when typing Polish characters in the address bar

I’ve encountered a reproducible issue with Brave Browser on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

When I type Polish characters using AltGr (e.g. ł, ó, ą) directly into the address bar, Brave freezes or crashes.

Important details:
– Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
– Brave version [tu wpisz brave --version]
– Keyboard layout: Polish (Programmer)
– Typing these characters works normally in other fields (search boxes, text fields in Brave, other applications). The issue happens only in the URL bar.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Brave on Ubuntu.
  2. Focus the address bar.
  3. Type AltGr + l (ł) or AltGr + o (ó).
  4. Brave freezes or crashes.

This makes it very difficult to use Brave with Polish keyboard layouts.

Could you please investigate this issue or advise on a workaround?

Thank you in advance,
Paweł

Today, after updating Ubuntu, a new version was installed (Brave 1.82.170 64-bit, Chromium 140.0.7339.186). The browser still crashes when typing the letter ‘ł’ (Alt + L) in Brave.

Thank you for the detailed report.
I just tested this on my end and am not seeing the same behavior as you. Can you tell me if you installed the browser via snap or flatpak? Or if you used the curl instructions from our website?

Thank you for your message. The Brave browser was installed on my system by adding the Brave repository to Ubuntu and using the standard system command apt install brave-browser. Specifically, I added the Brave GPG key, added the Brave repository to APT, updated the package list, and then installed Brave. It was not installed via Snap, Flatpak, or the curl instructions from your website.

I’m wondering if it’s the same issue that this user here is reporting:

:backhand_index_pointing_up: If it is the same here then this will likely get fixed very soon, as it has the P2 label with active conversation around it.

Actually it might be this issue instead – apologize for the confusion:
