Brave crashes on Ubuntu 24.04 Wayland when typing Vietnamese characters with IBus in the address bar

Description of the issue:
When typing Vietnamese characters with diacritics using IBus input method in the address bar, Brave browser crashes unexpectedly. This happens only when running Brave under Wayland on Ubuntu 24.04.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Brave on Ubuntu 24.04 with Wayland session.

  2. Switch input method to Vietnamese (IBus).

  3. Type characters with diacritics (for example: “ă”, “ư”, “ô”) in the address bar.

  4. Brave immediately freezes and then crashes.

Expected result:
Vietnamese characters with diacritics should be typed normally in the address bar without causing the browser to crash.

Brave Version (check About Brave):
Version 1.82.170 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:

  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Wayland session).

  • Input Method Framework: IBus.

  • This issue does not occur when running Brave under X11.

typing in vietnamese (for who wants to recreate the issue):

  1. Install ibus-unikey
  2. switch to that input method
  3. Typing (TELEX):

    • uw → ư

    • oo → ô

I have exactly the same problem. If I start typing any character other than Latin, the browser crashes immediately. Ubuntu 24.04, Brave 1.82.170
