When you open a new tab and start typing in omnibox using a Russian layout, the browser would hang for a few seconds and then crash. I’m using Ubuntu 24.04.
How can this issue be reproduced?
Have Russian layout installed and selected.
Open a new tab in Brave (the omnibox gets focused).
Start typing.
Expected result:
The text would be entered normally.
Actual result:
No next is entered, the browser would hang for a few seconds, and then crash.
Same issue here with any accented letter on Brave version 1.81.137 Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS. This happens only if I run brave with –ozone-platform=wayland or –ozone-platform=x11 flag (or I set these values in brave://flags).
Before I upgraded to this version, I noticed when I type any accented letter, its doubled in the omnibox.
Now on 1.81.137 the browser crashes after a few seconds. I accidentally discovered that after typing a letter, let’s say á (while the browser is hanging for a few seconds) I press a few backspaces it won’t crash, but there are hundreds of á letters are in the omnibox. My assumption is that these lots of letters (if not interrupted by backspace) make brave run out of memory or something similar.
Same issue with Hebrew (version 1.82.166). It seems like this happens with any non-Unicode character you have on an installed keyboard. Also, pasting works fine, only typing from the keyboard triggers the crash.
Wow! This also happens to me, and after I selected the whole string, cut it and pasted it in another place to count how many times the letter was duplicated (356 after a single backspace press) the problem suddenly disappeared and I can now type any character into the search box without crashing the browser.
The browser shows the same behavior again after locking and unlocking the computer. Also I tried it with other numbers of backspace and it seems to wildly vary between tries. I got 1281 repetitions with 2 backspaces, then 964 with 3 and 792 when I tried 1 again.
It seems that the number of repetitions has inverse parity to the number of times backspace is pressed (i.e. one is even when the other is odd and vice versa), but this might be just a coincidence.
Edit: 773 after a single backspace with another letter so it’s likely just a coincidence.

this also seems to happen with German umlauts. Everytime I type either ‘ä’, ‘ö’ or ‘ü’ the whol browser crashes. So maybe a general Characterset-issue? Those characters are - most likely like cyrillic characters - multi-byte-entities in UTF-8…
