Just tried the desktop mode trick and it didn’t work for me instantly, but after I put it in full screen, then changed to a different app or locked my screen it worked.
So I tried deactivating shields when logged in : it doesn’t work.
To summarize, the issue shows :
- In mobile mode, logged in
- Even without shields
And videos playing in background work :
- When logged out
- Logged in in a private tab
- Logged in in desktop mode
Thanks for testing without shields. So it’s likely not ad related, or at least, not that shields can control for now.
This is such an odd issue.
@Mattches since you were on this thread, this issue sounds familiar. I can’t find it, but do you also remember people stating background play didn’t work if signed in but would work if signed out and/or used a private window? That’s what it appears to be here, again another odd account specific issue (and why I can’t replicate it, it isn’t our phones).
Yeah so we’re seeing a lot of these reports. Some team members are able to reproduce this but others can’t. Looks like its Google/Youtube doing some A/B testing on the account side, which is why background play works for affected users if they’re not signed in but stops if they sign in.
Team is taking a look at this presently to see what we can do about this. Will update everyone when we have more information on this.

Hi! I am having the same problem since this afternoon (in hungary) . Im on an iphone 17, it was working for a week on this new phone and all of a sudden it stopped today. No updates or anything. I tried the browser mode on my phone as well as incognito and it didn’t work either…
Update: I just tested and the background play is back to normal.

Was a seperate issue, uBO was attempting to fix another YT issue

It got back to normal during the night ! I tested on jan. 25th 00:30 Paris time and it worked.
What are the chances that this A/B testing affects Google web store for extensions (and even some extensions as well) ?

The problem is back tonight, it 23:00 Paris time, only this time the problem remains in a private tab and/or logged out.
Maybe this previous A/B testing gave Google just the feedback they needed to prevent Brave users from using YT freely ?
I have a huge problem with my Brave browser app, I’ve been using it for a long time and now it is no longer playing Youtube videos in background, which is the main reason I started using the app in the first place. I updated the app and tried to restart my phone but it just won’t play in background anymore. It’s really stressfull because I need it everyday.
What can I do?
This is a new issue. Got the same thing. Worked fine until today 12:30am. Woke up this morning, nothing works. Refresh, restart, uninstall, restart phone, etc.
Same. The background play is the only reason I use Brave
I hope it’s just a temporary issue that will be fixed soon, the main reason I use Brave is because of the background player and I really need it
I got it working but you have to use desktop mode on YouTube the get the background to play again. Mine also went out at around 2pm today
