Youtube stops working when switching tabs or application

Hi !

Description of the issue:

Overnight, Youtube started to systematically stop when I switch tabs or reduce Brave application, no long playing the video in the background as he used to do.

How can this issue be reproduced :

  1. Play a video on YouTube.com

  2. Switch tab or press home button on the smartphone.

Expected result:

The video immediately stops. The audio stops, the video pauses.

Brave Version : 1.84.141

Mobile Device details :

Phone model => Redmi Note 14 5G ; OS version => Xiaomi HyperOS 2.0.206.0.VOQEUXM ; Android version => 15 AP3A.240905.015.A2

Additional Information:

I should point out that I have tried various solutions. Including delete the application, delete all data, check that autoplay is enabled in the settings, delete all cookies… I also checked if this problem had already happened to someone, and it has, but all the solutions concerned settings that are no longer found on the current version of Brave.

However, when switching the page to desktop mode the problem no longer occurs.

This may seem obvious but can you confirm that the Background play option is toggled “on” in Settings --> Media in the app?

After speaking with the Android team, we think this is a result of Youtube doing some A/B testing that may be breaking our background play implementation.

I’m discussing this with the team now and will reply back here when I have more information.

Can you tell me what region/location (roughly) you’re in? This would allow us to use a VPN and to approximate the region and see if they’re performing this testing by region/location and then test to see if we can reproduce the issue.

I have the same issues with brave browser app on Android. Putting it in desktop mode doesn’t have the same problem. Also using YTmusic, doesn’t have the same problem.
