YouTube not running in background

Description of the issue: YouTube on brave it’s not running in the background anymore. Until yesterday, it was okay, but since this morning, everyone I change tabs or minimize, the video stops.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):

Android 12

Brave 1. 86.140 | chromium 144.0. 7559. 76

Same here ! It started yesterday morning. Weird thing is that no Brave update took place before.

One occurred after, in the following evening (that didn’t solve the problem)

The ability to run YT video in the background just vanished overnight.

Can you both tell me the specific Android devices you’re using? Background play is working for me on the latest build using my Galaxy S22+.

Mine is a xiaomi redmi note 10. It’s working fine until few days ago.

My wife and I are also unable to play YT in the background since the latest update.

Google Pixel 6 running Graphene OS, and Samsung A35 5G. Both running Brave v. 1.86.140. Android 16 on the Pixel.

Edit: just tried 1.86.142 and the same problem persists.

Chiming in to say it’s happening to me too now, as of this afternoon. I thought an update might fix it but I was wrong. Won’t even play when I have something going in another tab.

specs:

Android 12; Build/SP1A.210812.016

Brave 1.86.142, Chromium 144.0.7559.97

I am sadly unable to reproduce this issue. Version 1.86.140.

(Attached video in case I did it wrong?)

OnePlus N200 5G / LineageOS 23 (23.0-20260102-NIGHTLY-dre) AOSP Android 16 (with “MindTheGapps” for Play Services and Google Apps)

(Even though it works for me, me listing my systems information can help the devs determine what might be different between our versions of Android.)

My device is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

Same here. as of updating, right after the update.

Samsung Galaxy S10 (Android 12)

Brave 1.86.142, Chromium 144.0.7559.97

Please fix

Having the same issue but if you switch to desktop site in settings that fixes it.

Updated to 1.86.142 manually (for some reason Play Store didn’t say the update was available until I went to the apps page). Still can’t replicate.

Is anyone else on AOSP able to test? I know @NNActual is running Graphene which uses AOSP as the base, but they have the issue.

I wonder what’s different. Sandboxing? Do Samsung and the other phones sandbox? (Not sure why it worked before though, but I’m just a user trying to help find the root cause).

As far as I know Samsung doesn’t sandbox, or if they do it isn’t enabled on our phone, but haven’t looked into it in depth.

Can also confirm the workaround @Rare_1 suggested, switching to desktop mode, does solve the issue.

Kudos for trying to solve an issue you aren’t experiencing!

Oh you’d be surprised at what I’m willing to try and debug, without being able to replicate.

Since that workaround works, I wonder. Someone a few months back had background play issues, and they found if they didn’t sign into their Google account, background play worked, making it oddly an account related thing. (Or at least, the login state mattered).

And apologies if I missed it, does a private window (which also would be signed out) work? I wonder if this is related to that old issue I remember.

I believe its being caused by the ongoing ad war. Youtube probably rolled out some new thing that kills the stream for mobile users as desktop still works fine and so do other mobile sites.

I just tried playing in the desktop window, and in private window, and it is working fine. Also, when putting in full-screen, and usind the picture-in-picture, also works fine.

But When I switch to the normal tab, it start to not working again.

I screen recorded, but I can’t upload the video cause I’m a new user.

I just tried and I can confirm :

  • It works when I Iog out
  • It works in desktop mode / logged in
  • Super weirdly : it works in a private tab even if I log in !

Good thinking !

Hmm. I wonder if it is ad related? The only difference I can think is when private, or signed our, you don’t get personalized ads.

Try turning shields off while signed in when it doesn’t work. Maybe it’s shields vs Google ads?

I’m so glad I remembered this. Sadly back then there was no solution but the ads is certainly something we didn’t think of then.

Same here on google pixel 8 since this morning.

Can confirm on my oneplus 13 running android 16 / oxygen 16.

Youtube works but background play does not even after restart and reinstall of brave.

Brave 1.86.142, Chromium 144.0.7559.97

Just downgraded
from Brave 1.86.142, Chromium 144.0.7559.97
to :

Brave 1.86.141,
Chromium 144.0.7559.59
(Github Link)

and background play now works.

(Samsung Galaxy S10, Android 12)

UPDATE: After signing in to my account - ==it does NOT work!!!==

UPDATE 2: Using “Desktop Mode” makes it work again. (WHAT?!?!)

I am no coder, but don’t get why would Signing In effect this…. ?

UPDATE 3: Downgraded to v1.85.119.
SAME!!!
Works without account, does not work when signed in.
FFFFFFFFFFFFF!
Are we !@#!@???

So this might have NOTHING to do with the latest update??

UPDATE 4: Just asked my brother - OnePlus 13R.
He said for him it still works (even when signed in).
so there’s hope???
