Hi. I as many others request the feature: translate single words/phrases/sentences/etc on a given website INSTEAD of translating the whole page.
WHY: because MANY MANY people need that except me and we need it because we often know a given website langusge yet some words or phrase are not clear. Besides Brave warns us that other translate extentions (DEEPL f.ex) make our Brave experiense LESS secure! ANd we wish the security of Brave WHILE having this featur also! Otherwise we would not be using Brave.
Thank you.
I use the āhttps://www.deepl.comā website. Sometimes, the DeepL app. Never the extension.
it is not practical. I do use deepl extension - cause I do not have to mark+copy+go to deepl website⦠BUT I do want that feature - mark+translate from Brave Translate offered.
Itās already exists. If you highlight something and right click you will see translate selection. At least for translating content thatās on the site that weāre on.
Then when you click on like Translate this section to English
The only thing is Brave does not have a thing to translate the text we type, at least not that Iām aware of.
Hey @Saoiray,
While I do get the option to translate the web page to English like this :
Iām not to find the option to āTranslate selection to Englishā from the right-click context menu as we have posted :
is this option specific and offered only for supported language by Brave Translate?
@abhinavbharadwajr it would be through Brave Translate. Trying to think if thereās even a way to hide it.
But like to look at the page you showed:
Maybe this is on Windows but not Mac? Though that wouldnāt make sense to me.
If you check brave://settings/languages do you have Brave Translate enabled? Also check the languages mentioned there to see if you have it off for any particular languages or anything.
And yes, this is neither Windows nor Mac. Iām using Brave on Linux, Fedora 42 to be specific.
Exactly our point. A feature like this shouldnāt be specific to the operating system.
Yes I have Brave Translate enabled.
I tried adding my desired language, but this changes nothing. Iām still not getting the option to translate selection from the context menu. Iām guessing that adding languages to this section will help one to translate the contents in whole from web pages - not for selected text.
@abhinavbharadwajr interesting. Just was playing around and found the difference. Itās tied into the default search engine. I still use Google. When you choose Google, it allows for the translation. But if you donāt use Google, it goes away:
So like when it was on Brave Search
It did like you saw:
But set the search to Google:
And it became available:
The above said, Iām going to tag @Mattches to see if can get eyes on it from Brave. This does feel like an oversight or bug, as the option should remain despite the default search engine, going through Brave Translate.
It would be nice if you stopped confusing people here (you did the same in another thread) no there is NO such possibility in Brave using OF COURSE brave search. WE came to brave in order to stop supporting any of google=big-brother-is-watching-you. So no google search for us. What you are in brave for - this is your secret.
@1beginner, Iām sorry to hear you found my help confusing. What youāre seeing in this conversation is how issues often get discovered and solutions identified. You and abhinavbharadwajr mentioned wanting a particular feature. I pointed out that the feature already existed and provided screenshots to confirm it.
abhinavbharadwajrās feedback helped me realize there must be some toggle or setting difference causing the issue. I then spent quite a bit of time going through multiple profiles and adjusting settings to figure out what was happening.
Why? Simply to help you. In the end, I discovered the issue was related to the default search engine. Once we narrowed it down, I tagged Mattches from Brave to make sure it was on his radar. With more specific information, the Brave team is in a better position to understand the problem and decide if the request can be addressed.
When you mentioned that people come to Brave to get away from Google, I understood your point. Thatās why I said it feels like an oversight or bug that this feature only appears when Google is the default search engine. It doesnāt seem intentional, and itās also why I flagged it for someone at Brave to take another look.
Iām not sure why there seems to be hostility or the suggestion that Iām trying to confuse anyone. Either way, Iāve done my part in helping uncover the root of the issue. Now itās up to the Brave team to decide what comes next.
Wonderful. Thanks for the time and effort you took to look into @Saoiray ![]()
@Saoiray thank you for responding and for all the help you provide for us and our users. Your response here was on point and relevant ā not confusing at all.
Hereās the deal on the context menu translation:
- At this time, we do not have the context menu
Translateoption pointing to Brave Search, as Brave Search translation is not set up yet. We are currently evaluating several different options to support this and hope to have this available soon. - As @Saoiray pointed out, if you have Google set as your default Search engine, you can use the context menu
Translateas it will leverage the Google Translate feature available through their search widget. - Once translation has been setup via Brave Search, the context menu option will then appear when Brave Search is selected as the default engine and provide translation via Brave Search.
Hope this helps.
This works great in Vivaldi. i have translate in the panel and it works as soon as I select text on the page.
Why not the extention?
will you make it known to all as soon as it will be possible to mark and translate?
I use only 2 custom-built browser extensions - the complete javascript of each, I know and understand. Otherwise, I prefer an Internet browser that is not burdened by extensions ā the javascript of which, I do not know.
For me, Brave Browser is primarily a āPrivacy & Securityā application; and I do not add accessories that make the situation more complex ā and can make trying to fix problems, more complex.
I do have it enabled -it is ONLY FOR WHOLE websites translation⦠MacBook
