Translate option missing

hi guys,

Long story short, my SSD crashed on laptop, so just finished setting up new SSD, windows 11 & etc. Had been using Brave for over 3-4years now. Earlier when I right clicked on text area, I could see option “Translate selected text to English”; since the new installation the option seems to be missing for me. I am not sure, if I disabled any feature accidentally, as I can’t see the option. Here’s you can find the screenshot - https://www.imagevenue.com/ME1CAYF0

Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure you may not have had an extension installed that does this? Chromium and Brave have not had such an option for as long as I can recall (since April of 2025 at least).

It’s why I wrote my own Javascript “bookmarklet” in the toolbar to translate selected text, because Brave doesn’t:

hey thanks for replying. No, I didn’t have any extensions on Brave. Actually I was surprised with the feature, it was working fine until Thursday too, I just selected text & asked for translate, would do the on the same page in a small popup. Here’s the screenshot on how it looked - https://www.imagevenue.com/ME1CAYKW

I got the screenshot from this post on brave - Translate a selected text - #4 by DarkAngie

@goo This only works if you have Google as your primary search engine. Are you using something else? Maybe it’s at the defaulted Brave Search for now?

That was it!

I never used Google as my search engine, and honestly had zero idea those two were related. Never would have, the UI doesn’t make that obvious.

perfect, you are a life saver, thanks a ton mate. Yeah it was selected to Brave search by default, I looked everywhere other than that, as I didn’t even guess it could make an impact, lol.

Me neither. I’m not changing my default search engine so I’m keeping my Javascript bookmarklet since it uses Google Translate anyway (probably in the same way that menu item works).

But yea, the UI really should be more clear (and on Chromium’s part as well!) that a menu popup unrelated to search, actually is related to search preferences.

@goo honestly, it shouldn’t. I have requests in with the devs to work on that. It’s weird as they have Brave Translate for full pages and all, but I guess they are working to expand more before they can fully plug it in for small things like the selected sentences.

It makes no sense to me, but at least has been requested and is on their radar. Until then, it’s just piggybacking from Google and Chromium code to allow for it.

Except this option for some reason:
(Chromium)

(Brave)

No reason it’s gone, it’s just gone.

I don’t care about search engine, I hardly use them anyways unless I have to download some new stuff & I always use private windows. For me translate selected text saves literally hours every day, as we have people sharing msgs on our platforms in all the major European languages, I can’t learn them all :joy:
