Screen times out during fullscreen YouTube playback on Android

Description of the issue:

When playing a YouTube video in fullscreen mode using the Brave browser on Android, the screen eventually times out and turns off as if the app is not active.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Play a YouTube video in the Brave Browser for Android

  2. Turn on full screen (video switches to landscape mode)

  3. Put the phone on the table next to you, eventually the phone goes into sleep after time specified for screen timeout in Android settings.

Expected result:

When a video is playing fullscreen, the screen should stay awake and not go to sleep.

Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave 1.82.166, Chromium 140.0.7339.133

Mobile Device details: Android 15; Build/AP3A.240905.015.A2

Additional Information 1: In Firefox for Android and Chrome for Android the full screen mode works as expected – no screen timeout / sleep as long as video in fullscreen.

Additional Information 2: Settings > Media > Background play > OFF

This has been happening on my device (Android 15) for a couple of months now, still not working. Background Play stopped working but was fixed last update.

The only fix I have found is to close all tabs and then close the app completely. Normal operation does come back but doesn’t last very long.

We have an open issue for this here:

I’ve added this report to the thread and have pinged some devs internally about this.

Thank you Mattches, I’ve gotten used to the workaround now, but it would be great for this to be fixed.

In my case this only happens, when brave was in background or display was off, and a YouTube Tab is active and has to be reload. Then brave is respecting your display time out settings, while playing your video.
