Earlier in Brave, Ctrl + Shift + S used to ask me to select an area.
Now it instantly takes a screenshot without showing any UI.
No screenshot extensions overriding
No shortcut conflict
This started suddenly after an update
Is this intended behavior or a regression?
Is there any way to restore area selection for Ctrl + Shift + S?
[Brave: 1.86.148, Chromium: 144.0.7559.133 (Official Build) (64-bit), Windows 10]
Update: This seems to be fixed now. The shortcut is back to showing the area selection UI, likely due to a Brave update. I didn’t change any settings on my end.
Not sure why – I still get the selection cursor on Windows and macOS when I use the screenshot shortcut. I don’t believe anything was changed with respect to this feature recently.
Gonna be honest, didn’t even know of this shortcut, but tried it, and nothing happens at all for me. No screenshot taken, no UI even shows up that a screenshot should be taken, and whatever is in my Clipboard was what I last put in it.
Windows 11 25H2, v1.87.186.
So since I read it’s apparently a thing most browsers support, I tried Chromium, Edge, Firefox, and it’s also not working there for me.
I then grabbed just for sanity a modern Corsair K65 keyboard, and no, Ctrl+Shift+S still isn’t actually working.
But worth mentioning is Firefox should also support this, and it too is not working. (I did assume Edge and Chromium supported this combo as well, but I only see Firefox documenting it officially).
So I went to my ThinkPad which was still on the version available during the Superbowl (as I used it on the TV to watch it) and sure enough, Ctrl+Shift+S worked there. So I let it update to the latest Brave released today, yet Ctrl+Shift+S STILL continued to work. (They are synced, all of it, extensions too, so there isn’t a difference I’m aware of, but I might end up trying a new profile IF the update on the ThinkPad’s Windows 11 install doesn’t still “break” it.)
I’m going to let the ThinkPad update Windows 11. I’m wondering since Firefox got affected too, if this is a Windows update.
UPDATE: It is not a Windows 11 update.
I then tried a Private Window, no dice. I tried a New Profile, still no dice.
I then ran Switch Hitter, just to see, is Windows even seeing this key combination, and it is.
I’m not sure here, I can very much replicate it, but I cannot even find a single workaround.
Thanks, I started to suspect something was off when I’d clear Brave’s shortcut to try and just re-set it up, and oddly, I could not tap S, it’d get stuck with Ctrl+Shift, but when “S” was pressed, Brave was not seeing it. This made me then think since the ThinkPad wasn’t affected in any way, the only difference I thought of is my desktop is Team Red, and the ThinkPad is Intel/Nvidia (though old), so it must be something installed on Windows itself intercepting it.
Even if OP doesn’t have a Radeon, I’d check Nvidia’s app too for a similar shortcut.
(I find it creepy now officially knowing AMD’s driver is reading my keyboard at all times, and can even prevent keystrokes if the app gets them from Windows like Brave, and not directly from scan codes like Switch Hitter.)
Clarification: I should mention that IF OP has an AMD GPU, driver 26.1.1 in particular has been a tragic mess with the Adrenaline Edition app (the one capturing these key strokes), sometimes it won’t even load, and you need to reboot. The driver itself for graphics, and games itself is fine, but the app is heavily broken in 26.1.1, and since they said it used to work, I wonder if this broken Adrenaline Edition suddenly thinks Brave is a “game”.
