Brave freezing every couple of minutes

Brave keeps freezing on me. Tried to reinstall, deleted history and any data from the start (i thought it was loading all that data). Tried to play with the settings (hardware acceleration and that stuff), and nothing so far has helped. I had acrobat reader extension, disabled that, still freezes.

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Brave is up to date

Brave 1.86.148 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium: 144.0.7559.133

Additional Information: Freezes for about 15seconds every couple of minutes

I am using Microsoft Windows 11 Pro version 10.0.26200

Please edit your Original Post (“OP”) above, in order to include your Operating System and its version numbers.

Testing . . .

When you get a chance, in a Brave Browser New Window, go to: brave://settings/privacy and Disable all of the Data collection switches.

Also go to: brave://settings/clearBrowserData and using the Basic tab, with Time range > All time . . . Enable all of the switches and click the Delete data button.

Exit / Quit everything and restart your computer. Test your issue.

More testing . . . If you have extensions that you installed:

Create a new user Profile for Testing:

Create and use AN ADDITIONAL Brave Browser user Profile (Menu --> More tools --> Add profile) - only ← meaning: Do not have any other Brave Browser user Profile tabs/windows open.

When creating this new Brave Browser user Profile for test purposes

  • Do not import anything.
  • Do not add any extensions.
  • Do not allow/enable any Brave Browser “bells and whistles” such as Brave Rewards, Brave Talk, etc.

IF this test Brave Browser user Profile does not present your problem, then possibly, the profile that you have been using, has a problem . . . and that might be caused by one or more extensions, or too many tabs ← complex/conundrum.

Detailed info about testing - IF, in regard to memory and performance issues:

Create a new profile to help Troubleshoot

Extensions Tests:
  • test by disabling all extensions
  • test by enabling each extension individually
  • test by uninstalling all extensions
  • test by installing each extension individually
  • test combinations of extensions
  • test order of installation of extensions

IF you are using Brave Sync, Disable that.

Also, you might take a look at brave://components ← run down the list and see what may not be update-able . . . is struggling.

Because Brave Browser might be “freezing” while awaiting some data transfer that is problematic.

@wtgwegwgsd is it “freezing” when you’re going between websites? When watching videos? Or what exactly are you doing when the issue occurs? Is it on all sites or only some?

It sounds like a you have done a decent amount of things to try to narrow down issues. As 289wk mentioned, it can be helpful if you test with a second browser profile to see if it happens there as well. That second profile will run with no extensions and with most settings to default.

Beyond that, I would be curious if you can check Task Manager. Not only your OS one but check Brave’s Task Manager (Shift+Esc is default keybind, or you can access via three line hamburger menu → more tools → task manager). It would be nice to know if you’re seeing high memory usage or what’s going on when you notice the freezes, not to mention to know what is causing the increase.

Also, if you install Brave Beta or Brave Nightly and try to use it, does it have the same issue or do they work with no issues?

If those also have issues, then please try Chrome and advise if it has problems.

Checking all of this will help narrow down a lot more and hopefully let us guide you to a solution.

Oh, and also please make sure to mention which OS you’re on. Such as if on Windows, to know that but also to be aware of whether it’s Windows 10 or 11.
