Background play not working after latest Brave update for Android phones

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:

Hi,

After updating to the latest version of Brave on Android (1.87.190), background play stopped working. It was working fine on February 18 and earlier versions. I’m using a Samsung S26 Ultra phone, and the issue started appearing on February 20, 2026.

Just wanted to report this so it can be checked and hopefully fixed in an upcoming update.

Thanks for all the great work on Brave, it’s been my go-to browser for a long time.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Brave browser

  2. Open youtube and play music or any video

  3. After the end of the song / video, doesn’t the next video automatically - even though I have Background play enabled in settings

Expected result: Should go to next video

Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.87.190

Mobile Device details: Samsung S25 Ultra

Additional Information:

I actually just replied to another user’s thread with the same issue. However, this issue appears to have already had a fix put in by the Android team a few weeks ago.

That said, after updating to v1.87.190 I’m seeing this a swell. I’ve reached out to the Android team for more information.

Thank you @Mattches for you response. I also tried reinstalling Brave for android, still the same issue - background play doesn’t work (even with the setting ‘Backgound Play’ turned on - Brave version 1.87.190).
Could you please reach out the Android dev team and have this fixed? Thank you so much!

@rravindranath could you test with the Experimental list in settings/shields/content filtering. Then reload youtube?

Doesnt work with the experimental filter enabled, stops after each video.

Trying to reproduce this, here is my steps. Correct me if I’m doing this incorrectly.

Using a Samsung Fold 7.

  • I open tablet form, open Brave
  • Open youtube.com and search for “Lofi Girl” for 24/7 music streaming
  • Then close the phone
  • Music keeps play will screen is off.

Another test;

  • I open tablet form, open Brave
  • Open youtube.com and search for “Lofi Girl” for 24/7 music streaming
  • Send Brave into the background
  • Open another application (like X/Twitter)
  • Music keeps playing in the background

The issue is that it plays one song correctly in the background and then stops and doesnt jump to the next one, or it jumps to the next one and plays it a few seconds and then stops.

Not all bands have a 50min video that covers the entire album, that way you could listen to the whole album in background.

And youtube music also stops after one song and doesnt continue to the next one.

it still doesn’t work - when I say doesn’t work, it doesn’t play the next song.

Yes, this is exactly the issue. After updating to v1.87.190 of brave, this issue started. Before that it worked (was going to next video/song after another continuously).

Brave Support - could you please have this fixed?

There’s an updated version of Brave v 1.87.191 - the issue of “Background play not working” hasn’t been resolved in this version as well. I hope the team is working to release a fix for this ASAP.

Issue is not fixed in Brave - Nightly 1.89.81, Chromium 146.0.7680.32 either. At least not in YouTube Music.

Our team is working on fixing this. We appreciate your patience.
