Why does Brave keep adding new search engines to the “inactive” list? And how to make it stop?
There used to be a setting to prevent it, but I cannot find it. I thought of ‘web discovery project’ but I checked and it was already turned off.

This is open search indexing the engine you used and yes they are added automatically. You’re right, there used to be a way to disable this but I don’t see it anymore either. I’ll dig around and see if we removed it and/or if there is another way to disable it.

That’s fine but it’s worth mentioning that those entries are just short strings that are saved and the amount of space taken by adding a search engine – or even adding 100 – to these lists is negligible with respect to how much “bloat”/used space gets taken up.
Why obsolete this feature? Were there complaints about it?

That’s good to know, but I’d still like to disable the feature if there’s a non-hacky way to do it.
Yea, we’re talking bytes per entry, not even kilobytes, it’s quite small.
That’s a question for Google. They are the ones who added it, removed it, and made this “feature”.
I hate it as well, because it’s a form of tracking. Like, I can clear my cache, history and cookies when I close the browser, however this section always hints where I frequent. For example, I’ll just be straight up honest, mine right now shows the Pirate Bay. That right there says I do visit the site, despite clearing my cookies, history and cache.
But, I can’t put blame on Brave either. This is Chromium, and it stinks. Best they can do is try and see how challenging it may be to put that flag back in, if maintainable. Sometimes they can’t just be put back in. Chromium uses so many mojo interfaces this is likely another one.
