Why am I being logged out of Gmail and Outlook web mail apps

From my desktop PC that only myself and my wife has physical access to we leave Gmail and Outlook web mail access open so we can simply click on a shortcut bookmark tab to re-open access to our mail. In the past few days I’ve noticed that the behavior has changed and I’m now being logged off and I’m having log on again which is inconvenient. Does anyone know what has changed and how to go about fixing this so we don’t have to repeatedly logon.

Note that I check the clearing behavior and I do not clear cookies as I use CCleaner instead as it knows what cookies I need to keep that are related to logon access behavior. and after I cleared Brave and cleared unwanted cookies using CCleaner I was logged out of GMail but upon returning to CCleaner there were no cookies present in their list.

I’m also using [Brave 1.82.161 (Official Build) (64-bit)].

Note this may not be a Brave issue but I’m going to start here and see if anyone is seeing this behavior on their PC.

When exactly is it that you’re being logged out? Is it every time after you close and relaunch the browser? Only sometimes? Or every time you reboot your PC? Or is it random?

Additionally I would recommend simply testing to see if cCleaner is causing the issue just to be sure. Just disable it for a short time and try browsing normally and see if closing the browser/rebooting your PC/etc. causes the issue to occur even with CCleaner disabled.

it happens to me also,

i am not using any cleaning app.

every two weeks it log me out of my accounts and profiles,
and responds to me as a new user.

Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ll reference Gmail first.

I access my Gmail account through mail.google.com, and I have a bookmark tab setup to take me to my email account at any time, and up until the last few days I’ve never had to log into Gmail as it’s kept open. In other words, even if I shut down my PC or close Brave, I can click on my bookmark tab and I’ve always logged into GMail unless I specifically log out which, again, I don’t do.

Yesterday I clicked my bookmark tab to access Gmail and found that I was logged out so I logged back on. Today, after my morning startup, I opened Brave and hit my bookmark and found myself logged out of Gmail again so I logged back on. I then went to check to see if anything had been added or changed in how I clear history and cookies and found nothing different and I never clear anything upon exiting from Brave and I never clear cookies as I control cookies thru CCleaner as it has the ability to only delete cookies I have not tagged to keep. That being said, I checked CCleaner and there was no new cookie related to Gmail, so I cleared out all the rest and went about my business.

A few hours later I returned to my PC that was still on, opened Brave, clicked on my bookmark and found that I was logged out of Gmail again after having already logged on earlier. I’m not sure if it’s random as I’ve opened and closed my browser multiple times since the last time I was in Gmail and so far so good. To test this out further I also shut down my PC and upon restart I was able to access Gmail, so I’m a bit baffled as to why things have changed but, I did an AI query through Copilot, and it mentioned that this was being reported as an issue and specifically mentioned Brave and things in settings that might be causing this new behavior. I went through the list (see below) and none of my settings were involved. Note that I do have the Bitwarden extension added to Brave, but I’m running what I believe is the current extension level of 2025.8.2 and my copy of Brave is showing that it’s current as well

Yes—Brave has had recurring issues with Gmail and other Google services logging users out, especially after closing the browser. Here’s what’s been reported and what you can do:

:puzzle_piece: Common Brave-Specific Causes
• “Clear cookies on exit” setting: Found at . If enabled, it wipes session cookies, logging you out of Gmail and YouTube.
• Brave Shields setting: “Forget me when I close this site”: This site-specific privacy feature can silently clear cookies for Gmail, even if global settings look fine.
• Fingerprinting protections: Brave’s aggressive anti-tracking features may cause Google to treat each session as a new device, invalidating login cookies.
• 2FA + VPN combo: If you’re using two-factor authentication and a VPN, Brave’s privacy features may trigger Google’s security heuristics, forcing a logout.
• Brave Sync or password manager conflicts: Some users reported issues when Brave Sync is enabled, especially with Google account integration.

Yesterday I logged into my GMail account by accessing mail.Google.com. Normally

Can confirm it’s happening to me as well since past few weeks. Never happened before.
Now I have to re-login to all my gmail accounts every few days

So I’m wondering if anyone working for Brave Support is looking into this. I saw an old posting about a github issue previously but nothing else but other’s complaining about being logged out of Gmail and YouTube. Seems to me that this should be a high level priority issue as I don’t think this is happening in the Edge browser (I’m going to start monitoring Edge more closely now) so if Edge is not logging me out then it would appear it’s not a chromium issue but a Brave issue.

We are looking into this issue presently – I will reply back here as soon as I have more information.

Thanks. I appreciate your efforts to get this resolved and I’m sure that the other’s that replied feel the same way.

We do have an older open issue for this that describes the same thing (note that the title states it’s Windows users only but I believe we’ve discovered that it’s not specific to Windows), but there appears to be an uptick in reports in the last few days.

I’ve added some of the new reports of this to the thread and pinged a few team members internally to take another look. The issue can be found here if you’d like to follow it:

Just a follow up. Someone on Reddit said that they are experiencing the same issue and asked whether I noticed anything else besides Gmail and I took a quick look and found another one. I use Messages for Web as well https://messages.google.com/web/welcome that allows me to send text messages from my PC instead of finger pecking on my cell phone and it too has remained live and I had to logon yesterday and had to log on again today. People on Reddit are saying the issue is impacting YouTube as well so it appears that it’s some issue between Brave and Google related apps. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to let you know that I tried adding the fixes for Google and Gmail noted in the Github link you sent and they did not work unfortunately as I was still logged off. One thing I will mention is it seems that the log off is not immediate as when I first accessed Gmail this morning it was still live but when I returned home after 2 PM I needed to log back on and I just checked at 7:20 PM and I was logged off again but I can close Brave and reopen the session and it remains live.

Happening to me too, on Windows 11, even after updating earlier today to the newest build, Brave 1.82.166 (Official Build) (64-bit). I’ve been signed out of my Google account twice, whereas this never happened to me in all the years I’ve used Brave.

I’m having the exact same issue since 3 days now.
I’m able to use my account for some time but when I leave it for 3-4h i’m logged out and need to log in again.

Nothing changed, tried it on edge and firefox and i don’t see the same issue apearing there.
glad i’m not alone, was checkin if i was being targetted by hackers which makes you login again but then all my browsers would have the issue.

Hi @Mattches , this happens to me too often and it’s quite frustrating with the latest version of Brave. It happens to me in Hotmail and Cwallet.

Apparently, it’s the new versions of Brave. I have an old version of Brave Beta that I haven’t updated, and none of the sessions have closed. I installed another version of Brave Desktop, and they close all the time.
