Watching member videos/live streams on YouTube causes an error

Description of the issue:

Watching videos or streams that are members-only on YouTube results in the following error:

It will only play a bit of the start of the video before it shows this message.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open any members-only video or live stream (you need to be a member of the channel obviously)

  2. Play the video/watch the live stream

  3. Get hit with the above message

Expected result:

I should be able to watch it fine.

Brave 1.84.141 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:

As seen on this Reddit discussion, the only way I could get it to work was to disable Brave Shield completely.

There was some issues a few months ago, but was resolved.

Which channel are you visiting with members only, and does it occur on every members video posted and other YT channels?

It happens with pretty much any YT channel that has membership content

Does shields affect it?

Yeah, and I’ve figured out 2 things:

  1. I don’t actually need to disable Shields entirely, but I have to set the ad and tracker blocking to “Allow all trackers & ads” for it to work. So fingerprint blocking doesn’t affect it.
  2. I found a temporary workaround that does not require me to disable blockers whatsoever. The trick is to open the channel first and then navigate to the videos or livestream tab and then open the video from there. Doing it that way somehow makes the video load properly, and shield still enabled completely.

So I’m guessing the issue is trying to go to the video page directly. If you navigate to it from the channel page, it works fine.

UPDATE:
It doesn’t work if you open the direct link, go to the channel page, and open the video page from there.
The channel has to be opened on a fresh new tab for my workaround to work.
