When expanding and collapsing vertical tab groups there are two things that could be improved that can make the experience much better because it would be smoother:
The spacing between tab groups should remain unchanged
The favicons shouldn’t have to slide in from the left every single time the tab group is opened
Currently the tab group’s behavior is very janky while in vertical tabs. The gap between the tab group you’re opening and closing and the group below changes depending on if the tab group is open or not. The gap gets smaller when the tab group is open and larger (default) when closed. I don’t think this should be changing like this. It cheapens the experience.
Another thing that happens when opening the tab group is the favicons have to load each time. Why? Why do they pop out each time. They should just be cached I would think and they should just be there when you open the group.
Bonus:
The New Tab button should lose the divider above it (vertical tabs) - clutters up the UI
The background color of the tab groups (horizontal tabs) could be a little smaller. Currently they look huge compared to the other tabs that aren’t in groups.

Set up a few tab groups
Turn on vertical tabs
The first or middle tab group, toggle it open and closed
Expected result:
The gap below the tab group you’re opening and closing should not change.
The gap is possibly something that can be changed.
Not sure what you’re saying about the favicons. Even in your video they do appear to be loaded. The extremely brief instant you’re describing as “loading” is just the ending stage of the “tab groups open” animation/transition. If the favicons actually “weren’t loaded”, then they would appear as the default “globe” icon and/or (if you’re using Inactive tabs appearance “on” in settings) with the dotted circle:
In the video I posted, you can see that the favicons need to slide in each time. Why? What is the point of the that? The text (tab title) is already there. Why wouldn’t the favicon be there as well? Also, some opacity animation should be added to the tab titles as well. They’re getting smashed each time the tab group is collapsed.
I just think this simple animation could be cleaned up quite a bit to add more polish and provide a richer experience. It feels kinda thrown together currently.
I didn’t mean load as in loading the correct favicon. I misspoke. I corrected my post. I meant to express my dislike of the favicon sliding in from the left each time the tab group is opened. Doesn’t make any sense since the tab title is already there. Looks janky.
