Saved passwords disappeared in Brave, but "Login Data" file still exists

Description of the issue:
All my saved passwords disappeared from Brave suddenly. I did not delete them manually, reinstall Brave, or run any cleanup tools. When I go to brave://settings/passwords, the list is completely empty.

However, I checked my Brave user data folder and confirmed that the Login Data file still exists inside the Default profile folder. The file is larger than 0 KB, so it seems like it still contains data. I only have this one profile — there is no Profile 1, Profile 2, etc.

I tried creating a new Brave profile and copying the Login Data file into it, but the passwords still do not appear. Brave Sync was never enabled, so there’s no cloud backup.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Brave with existing Login Data file in the Default profile.
  2. Visit brave://settings/passwords
  3. Observe that no saved passwords are shown, even though Login Data exists and has size > 0 KB.

Expected result:
Brave should display the saved passwords stored in the Login Data file, assuming it is still readable.

Brave Version (check About Brave):
[Please replace this line with the exact version from brave://version, e.g., Version 1.63.165 Chromium: 122.0.6261.57]

Additional Information:

  • OS: Windows
  • I did not use any cleanup tool like CCleaner.
  • I did not change the Windows user or reinstall the OS.
  • Brave Sync is not enabled.
  • The file Login Data has not been deleted or modified manually.
  • I suspect the file may be encrypted in a way Brave can no longer read, or somehow corrupted, even though it’s still present.

Sorry I don’t have much for you on this one! You’ve tried simple restarting the your device?

Did this happen after a browser update or system update?

Have you always had a login password your windows user?

Sorry, more questions than anything. Hopefully someone from Brave will get to your question and be able to provide you with some possible solutions. It sucks losing passwords. I’ve learned to always back up everything you do not want to lose because it’s only a matter of time before something happens.

Same issue. My payment information is gone too, except for the last four digits and the expiration dates. But the numbers are gone, and all the passwords are gone.
