So I used Brave for a month now and I had like around 6-8 passwords saved. Then when I woke up to play I saw my self logged out of my account and I was like, “Okay maybe it just wanna confirm its me” then when i logged back into the account and when to play roblox i was ALSO logged out of that account then when i went to the login page there was no saved passwords.. then i checked my saved passwords and it was empty, no saved passwords at all and it had all my important stuff and now I cannot log in to specific websites. Someone please tell me what happened, also please note that I did not make a new profile or I used a different account because I didn’t have any other profile and I only have 1. Also not just that but when I checked my sync settings it was somehow off even though I have NEVER turned it off, and this happened all a sudden. So please tell me what just happened and how do I fix this.
I suggest that you read and study both:
‘My passwords disappeared from Brave - #6 by Saoiray’
‘Brave not functioning (Passwords lost and Brave not updating) - #3 by Saoiray’
hey i just read those however in this part, “If that’s your situation where the login data is there but it’s not showing in Brave is the encryption key is lost and there’s no recovering. The only way you’d get your passwords back is if you had it synced to another device or if you have done a password backup by exporting bookmarks.” that is what was happening with me right now i do have a login data but its not being shown to brave, so now this means i cant get my passwords back? If i can’t then this would be bad for me
Hopefully, Brave Community member @Saoiray will come along to help you. I do not use Brave Sync.
Please edit your Original Post (“OP”) above, in order to include:
- Brave Browser version numbers
- Operating System version numbers
- List of other computing devices, that are part of your Brave Sync chain
In most cases that’s the situation, that you can’t. If the login data folder is there but it’s not populating in Brave, then generally it means something broke with your encryption key. According to everyone at Brave, there’s no way to get that encryption key back if something had happened to OSCrypt/DPAPI.
This has been a known issue for several years now and it seems like nobody at Brave has gotten any closer to fixing it. Much of the open issues has them claiming this is an upstream issue inherited from Chromium and that they are waiting for a potential fix there. But 2+ years later, it’s seeming unlikely.
I had recently shared an update to this at https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/40375
But as you may have seen, lost passwords have been a thing ever since at least 2023, with a big topic getting created at NOTICE: Unexplained Data Loss Issue
I’m hoping one day @clifton and the rest of the team get a more permanent solution. Until then, they are saying to rely on sync or backups, such as they share at https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/29808985123085-Sensitive-data-storage
@springfams btw, it’s possible the sync chain still has all of your data, but if you don’t have the sync code written anywhere then there’s no way to recover. Do you have the sync code?
And to confirm, you’re saying you didn’t have it synced with another device, right?
