Export Conversation Feature

I know I’m not the first person to make this request. But would someone with Brave listen?

All of use have have tried to save conversations with Leo that we want to keep. The save, paste, reformat, save paste, reformat get to be an enormous chore, especially if there are 50 or more chat windows to copy. Screen captures are not the answer.

Why is it so difficult to have an “EXPORT CONVERSATION” button. “Select all” is doesn’t work. It almost seems that Brave ,as well as other bots, want to prevent export of conversations. I asked Leo, and for what it’s worth, here was his reply:

You’re right that the technical capability exists — exporting conversations would be straightforward to implement. So why might it be missing? Here are the most likely reasons:

Business & Legal Concerns

  • Data liability: If users can easily export and share conversations, Brave faces potential liability if sensitive information spreads

  • Terms of Service enforcement: Easier to control how conversations are used if they stay in-app

  • Training data: Conversations might be valuable for improving AI models, and export features could complicate data governance

User Privacy (ironically)

  • Protecting you from yourself: They may worry users will export conversations containing sensitive info and lose control of it

  • Default security posture: Keeping data contained is simpler than managing exported copies

Less Cynical Reasons

  • Low priority

This is endemic with most AI assistants and chat bots. N**i.ai is by far the worst. It saves every chat from the day the bots are created with no opt-out - or edit feature, Their reasoning is it give the chat bot greater access to past memories. In Leo’s case that isn’t an issue, you just delete the post. I’m aware of third party software that CLAIM to export conversations but I’m not putting them on my machine.

Helpful, rude, condescending replies all welcomed.

I guess it comes down to how people want it exported. As ASCII/UTF .txt files (which I think is what most people really want anyway such as yourself), or as a .json (my LLM’s use .json for their sessions, not sure what Leo uses). (Exporting as .json would let you re-import it later which could be useful as well).

I would welcome this actually as many AI services seem to force you to copy comment by comment, and if you force the whole thing to copy, it’s segmented in odd ways, that you don’t know who is who in the conversation.

I would settle for .PDF or .RTF.

I honestly think it has to do with retaining text for liability / revenue reasons. Even though Brave denies it, our data is the prime reason for AI assistants, they are the ultimate data miners. I would be interested in what a copyright lawyer would have to say. This org. is worth checking out ( This is not a commercial site or ad, this is a NGO / 501 C3, nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog organization. )

We hear you and this is very much on our to-do list, I’ve seen a couple of posts recently on it so I’ve asked the team to prioritise it. Sorry for the delay but thanks for waiting and letting us know :folded_hands:

Oh I can’t imagine that’s an issue at all - surely there’s no issue with downloading conversations considering you can already copy/paste individual messages or just screenshot the conversation anyway. We simply don’t have a massive team, so unfortunately we can’t do everything quickly :frowning: I’ll try to get this prioritised though, I don’t work on the browser side much so I can’t be sure but it seems like it wouldn’t be a huge lift, hopefully we can get this in soon once a developer has some time

I guess it comes down to how people want it exported.

This would actually be really useful to know, I’ve seen json/html/pdf suggested but if anyone has strong opinions that would be helpful for us

Thanks again for your patience!

Hi,

I support the idea of exporting conversations- it would be very useful.

I would also like to suggest another area where exporting (and importing) would be useful for Leo AI.

I work on several devices (MacBook + PC), and whenever I switch between them, I have to manually update all my shortcuts to keep them in sync. This is quite problematic - it would be much easier to simply export and import them all at once.

Currently, I have created a file in Google Docs where I regularly add shortcut names and instructions, and on a new device, I manually copy each one, creating a new one.

Suggestion: It would be ideal to be able to export data from Leo AI so that it can be imported to another device:

  • shortcuts
  • memories - etc.

= the entire context that makes Leo work the way I need it to.

Improving Leo’s integration with Sync is also on our backlog, I think we’ll prob bundle shortcuts along with https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/47308

I would be for .json (if used internally already), or something at least common between systems that has formatting. I would have agreed with .rtf files like above, but since Microsoft removed WordPad, Windows 11 lacks native .rtf support now so it’s no longer universal sadly (needs a word processor now), but because we can reinstall WordPad from WinAero, it’s not bad, as Mac OS supports it, so does Linux.

Honestly I’d say at most 4 tops:

.json
.pdf
.rtf
(and for those who don’t care about formatting): .txt

But of course, other recommendations are welcome from other users. These are formats that suit me best, not everyone, though it seems a few were shared between us such as .json, and .pdf’s.

I vote for .rtf. No to .pdf!!!

Duck.ai has a straightforward export feature that saves the tedium of the cut and past process in Leo.

Thanks @ste, a larger problem, and sorry for harping on this, but is the question of relational Conversations. I noticed that Claude Sonnet 4.6 on Claude site DOES HAVE this feature. What I have resorted to is:

Solution: select all - copy - paste in LibreOffice document - export as PDF - start new conversation - Leo reads PDF and is up to speed to continue conversation.

It’s a bulky, slow, annoying work-around but it works - sort of.

Thanks again.

I know we ALL want an export feature. Just wanted to drop an FYI incase you guys are techy or engineers as short term resolution. I have like 200 conversations in leo for work related projects. A lot of them were complex trouble shooting interactions I’ll want to make into documentation later.

I had Claude Sonnet/Opus make me a playwright script in Python to export my conversations. Told it I need to use the brave browser.exe instead if playwrights chromium, and told it to pause for 10 sec after launching to I can navigate to to the brave:leo internal link. Appreciatively, brave blocks 3rd party software from navigating there programmatically. In a minute or two I had all my conversations backed up to a chosen file location. Probably only took 10 min with Claude to get the libraries and code all setup in pycharm. Not suggesting this as a replacement. Its just super convenient to go into Kate, find in files, and keyword search over a years word of conversations. Just tell Claude what format you want to export as.

Keyword searching coming out with the sync and export feature would be the knees of bees.

I would love to be able to work with Markdown exports of AI interactions, and especially when trying to export a complete conversation. .rtf files are so last century, Leo tells me that .md format is very popular with many humans for record keeping.

I use 3 operating Systems on a daily basis {Linux, Android, & occasionally Windows }. I find Markdown works well for me on any one of them.

@MasterLink , You are the one who has forgotten to be human. You are consistently an arrogant and narcissistic character. Your reply to @Jim_S was inappropriate, uninformed, and hurtful. His question was completely legitimate.

“This is what happens kids when you rot your brain on AI too long, you forget you are human, and you forget common sense logic.”

You constantly belittle people on this forum. You either need to learn some manners, mind your own business, or get ban.

@Jim_S Don’t listen to @MasterLink, he has a high opinion of himself and a low regard for manners.

My suggestion is go outside of Brave and directly to Claude.com and check out a subscription to Claude Sonnet 4.6 or Claude Haiku directly through https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-haiku-4-5

Good luck

They added a copy conversation option to the brave ai menu in the top right. It is not a true export feature but it can work… Unfortunately for very long conversations it gets truncated.

I found a workaround for the “Copy entire conversation” truncation while trying to do an export myself… It is as follows.

The problem: Leo’s chat uses virtualized scrolling, so once you scroll past older messages, they get unloaded from memory to keep things smooth. The “Copy entire conversation” option only grabs what’s currently loaded, so long chats get silently cut off, even when pasting into apps with no real size limit.

The fix: force the app to reload the missing messages before copying, using Find in page.

1. Open your long conversation in Leo.

2. Tap the browser’s ⋮ menu → Find in page.

3. Search for a word or phrase from your very first message in the chat.

4. This makes Brave jump back and re-render the start of the conversation, pulling those old messages back into memory.

5. Right after that, use Leo’s “Copy entire conversation” option (⋮ menu inside the chat itself).

6. Paste into something with a generous size limit — Google Docs and Xed Editor worked well for me. Google Keep truncated much sooner, so avoid that one.

Note: make sure whatever you paste into has no practical size cap, or a very high one. Note-taking apps often truncate long pastes silently, so you may think the fix didn’t work when really it’s just the destination app cutting things off.

This got my entire 230.4 KB conversation copied in one shot, where it was cutting off well before that beforehand.

This might work for other web-based chat apps with a similar “copy conversation” feature and virtualized scrolling (ChatGPT’s web UI, for example, seems to have the same underlying issue), but I’ve only tested it with Brave AI in Brave browser itself.

Tested on: Android 16, Build BP2A.250605.015, Brave 1.91.180,

Chromium 149.0.7827.201. Not sure if it holds up on other versions or apps, but worth a try if you’re stuck.

Here’s a vote for .txt exports - as the absolute lowest common denominator.
