Error 12011 Browser restrictions prevent dialog box from opening

Description of the issue: Dialog box popup not showing up.

Full context: I’m using Excel online in brave browser. Specifically trying to use an add-on for the game EVE-Online in excel. I can open excel in browser and install the add-on too.
So this add-on allows you to add your in-game character to excel and get information on it.
But, to do this you need to log-in using a pop-up which shows up when you click a link in the add-on. The pop-up never shows up in brave. The error i get is as follows:

Error: 12011. Browser restrictions prevented us from creating the dialog box. The domain of dialog box and the domain of the add-in host are not in the same security zone.

Suggestion box (inside add-on): The security settings in your browser prevent us from creating a dialog box. Try a different browser, or configure your browser so that ‘https://excelprodstc.blob.core.windows.net’ and the domain shown in your address bar are in the same security zone.

This works in edge but does not work in Brave. I tried it by removing ALL shields and privacy/security settings. Have opened the links and clicked the “remove shields for this site” button. Closed brave and opened again. restarted and system and tried. Closed all tabs and tried again. Nothing works.

Been using brave since it came. Would appreciate any help @Mattches. Thanks.

**Exact URL of the website in question: either “**https://excelprodstc.blob.core.windows.net” or “https://excel.cloud.microsoft/open/onedrive/” (this is where the add-on is so not sure)

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (yes/no): yes

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off? No.

Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no): No.

Does the site work as expected when using Chrome? Does not work in chrome. Works in Edge.

Brave version (check About Brave): Brave 1.85.111 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Screenshots from the browser EXCEL online/cloud.

Oh that’s interesting, usually whatever doesn’t work Chrome also doesn’t work in Edge, so that’s unique.

Try this just as a test (if it doesn’t work, change it back):
Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site and Shields Settings > Pop-ups and redirects (near the bottom).

Then try enabling the boxed option in orange:

Close out of Excel 365 and try again. Does that work? I know you said it doesn’t work with Shields off, but I wonder if this setting might actually be separate.

If that does work, you can add the domain to Excel in the “Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects” option to keep the protection up, but exclusively off only for this (though the add-in’s popup seems to indicate it wants exclusivity as well, not just Excel 365).

@Gift-D-Son @MasterLink link makes a good point here. Further, do you see that any permissions have been blocked by default for the site? The fact that it’s saying “browser restrictions” to me implies a permissions issue (or Shields blocking something needed).

Reading this part of the error again, it almost sounds like it’s referring to third party cookies as well, unless I’m not interpreting that right.

This actually worked!
I put everything back up, shields, privacy and security, safe browsing on etc.
Only change was selecting sites can send pop-ups and it worked.

Thanks for the help. Appreciate it!

So, i put shields down for the site first, then removed shields and security altogether and tried again it still did not work.
But the solution given by @MasterLink worked. Even with shields and security up!

Awesome! So it was that then. That’s interesting because that’s the “old school” popup blocker.

That means Microsoft specifically has their own exclusions it doesn’t show you likely to ensure 365 works without issue (and a way to say “only compatible with Edge” of course, lol). This is what hinted to me that this option was likely it. Chromium was affected as well but Edge wasn’t. That box in the source code can hide exclusions from the user, and it’s clear Microsoft does on their own stuff.
