Component list fails to update - impacts multiple sites

Description of the issue: Several sites (like youtube and ebay) no longer run the way they should, and after some digging it turns out it is because none of my components brave://components/ are updating correctly. I have also checked in brave://settings/shields/filters and can see that that list also returns an error.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Go to brave://components/

  2. Click update

  3. See it spin, see it fail

  4. It is the same for all components on this list.

Alternatively.

  1. Go to brave://settings/shields/filters
  2. Click on Show full list
  3. Click on update
  4. See it spin, see it fail

Expected result: That the component update correctly

Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave 1.84.141 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium: 142.0.7444.176

Additional Information: This was running day before yesterday, so this came as a surprise.

@Sierb not sure if your issue is same or different, but going to paste some information below for a known issue some experience. It might be worth checking out.

it sounds like maybe you ran Brave as administrator instead of running normally. This can cause issues to occur where Windows will change permissions to components folders and others. Then when opened normally, it blocks access to those because it doesn’t have the right permissions. It’s a bit headache.

You’ll need to do one of two things, whichever you think is easier.

  1. Follow instructions at Brave doesn't start when I run it as administrator and Brave Shield doesn't work - #41 by clifton in order to reassign permissions to the folders. Do remember that you’ll need to completely close Brave and the background processes if you do this. Maybe just try restarting your device.

  2. If that’s too complex or doesn’t work for you, you would need to completely uninstall Brave and all of its folders. Obviously you would want to export passwords and/or bookmarks if you want to keep them. Then after that go to uninstall Brave and you’ll be met with a prompt asking if you would like to delete browsing data. You need to check that box so it will erase the components folders and others. Once done, install again and it should work.

If you uninstall without choosing that checkbox, it will keep the folders. So when you reinstall nothing will have changed.

Reminder, running as administrator can happen in two different places and should not be done.

  1. Right click and run as admin:

  2. Right click shortcut → properties → compatibility. There’s a checkbox for it, make sure it’s not selected

I checked if the Brave browser was running as admin and it was not.

I then checked if the user-folder was owned by the admin, and it was, so I reset it, and restarted the browser. The same error persists.
I will reboot and see if that sort if, and if it does not reinstall, which is of course the last resort.

@Sierb to be clear on this aspect, it’s not like it has to be running on it now. But was saying if it ever was opened that way, even as a troubleshooting step, then sometimes it shifts and can cause problems like you were experiencing.

Yeah, so would be in part of what I was mentioning. Hopefully the restart or so will solve it after you reassigned the permissions. If not, then please respond back with an update and maybe tag Mattches by typing his name with @ symbol in front

Reboot did not sort it. Reinstall it is. Yuck.

Just be sure to do a back up bookmarks and things… don’t rely solely on Brave Sync with the 24+1 Sync Chain Words code etc. (if you didn’t follow what I mean @Saoiray or I can explain)

Actually let me just add this…

@Mattches wanted eyes on this in case related to other issue since something similar had happened on Widevine earlier in the week

There’s bad news and bad news.

Saved history, passwords, bookmarks.

Uninstalled

Rebooted

Reinstalled

Checked the User data folder (it was set back to admin, so I reset it)

Components will not update

And now I cannot restore my last session from the history-data. All of my tab-groups are gone. Much sad.

And I am still no closer to this working. The sites still won’t load, including youtube.
It is this sort of thing that makes you want to give up on a browser. :frowning:

@Sierb can you confirm whether or not you’re using a VPN at this time? Can you also try downloading the Beta build (it will install as a separate browser, not overwrite anything currently installed) of the browser and tell me if you are able to update browser components and filter lists as expected in the Beta?

I am not using a VPN.
I will download the beta and give it a go.

Yes, the beta updates the components correctly. That’s just infuriating, as I am sitting here trying to recreate my lost tab-groups, that this could be resolved without me having to lose it all.
So what does this mean? That I will have to use the beta? Or is there a lesson we can learn from this which can be implemented on the non-beta for me?

On a Side Note about the Tab Groups…
sorry to tell you this after the fact (but at least a learning experience :man_shrugging:)

(also @Saoiray or @Mattches if you have a better solution to save Tab Groups let me/us know, please and thank you)…

But… for future reference… once they are re-created you can then seperate the groups temporarily into a New Window (just by dragging the groups out of the tab bar… and then back afterwards) and Bookmark All Tabs for those groups of websites into different folders and then put them all within ANOTHER folder Titled Tab Groups, then you have them saved as Bookmarks and can quickly and easily remake them, assuming they’re not constantly changing…

Just something to do in case you hadn’t thought of it before. :man_shrugging:

We’ll now I have gone through that, so if I have to move to beta or reinstall again at least I have that. Thank you very very much! <3
