Brave Browser Android takes 4 seconds longer than other Android browsers to respond to a website and load it

Description of the issue: The most recent version of Brave Browser Android takes 4 seconds longer to respond to a website before loading it compared to Android browsers like Cromite, even with a stable internet connection. I have disabled both Google Play and Google Play Services (without root; they are just disabled, not uninstalled). Even when using fast VPNs like Cloudflare WARP or Proton VPN, the same slowdown still occurs, as if removing Google Play Services were the cause of Brave’s slowness. I used Aurora Store (an alternative client for Google Play) to install Brave browser. And I have kept Brave’s default settings and haven’t modified any of them.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. I am not sure how.

Expected result: Brave Browser (Android) should respond to websites faster without an unnecessary 4-second delay compared to other Android browsers.

Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave 1.89.137, Chromium 147.0.7727.102

Mobile Device details Realme C55 phone. Android 13; Build/SP1A.210812.016

Additional Information: I really hope this bug is fixed as soon as possible, as it has been present since September 2023

Well it might load slightly slower if you have a lot of filter lists setup. Does this happen for every single website? Other browsers maybe able to load quicker because they don’t have the privacy features that brave has. 4 seconds can be pretty annoying but is it really that big of a deal when you take into consideration that there is a lot going on behind the scenes. It would be nice if privacy was included in all browsers but that’s just not the case. I would say this isn’t a huge deal. If it were something crazy like 20 seconds consistently then that would be way too long and unacceptable but 4 seconds, does it bother u that much now that you’ve totaled up all the websites that you’ve gone to since noticing this in 2023.

I don’t have any filter lists set up, I don’t use VPNs, local VPN-based apps, or DNS servers that do ad/tracker blocking or filtering (I just use Quad9 DNS and sometimes Cloudflare DNS as my phone’s DNS). You might be right if those 4-second delays occurred only on first visits, but they happen all the time with all websites, even with sites that are plain text, super lightweight, and contain zero ads or trackers, like https://example.com. Every time I load or reload such sites in both normal and private tabs, Brave delays 4 seconds and sometimes 5 seconds instead of loading them right away. I even uninstalled the previous version of Brave browser instead of updating it and made a fresh install of the latest release using Aurora store, but the same issue is still present to this day since September 2023.

I’m having the same issue now, before today I used to get this issue sometimes but would always fix after restarting the app, but now that no longer fixes it.

Can anyone here experiencing this tell me what Android device/model they’re using as well as the Android OS version?

Sure!

Device: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7

OS Version: Android 16, One UI 8.0

Seems to have fixed after restarting the phone through a software update. Another Fold 7 user with what seems to be the same issue: Lag/delay/slow when opening anything from an android phone / fold7

Do you have the setting to delete site data when you leave the webpage or close the browser enabled? That should make things quicker but then your losing little crumbs of privacy. I understand what your getting at though. You’ve noticed a consistent slowness and it’s not as easy as just ignoring it. Have you tried the go to stuff like clearing cache? Checking again, then maybe even going as far as clearing the data and to uninstall/reinstall the app? Where did you get the app from the play store? Github? Maybe time for a new device? I can’t remember what device your using. Do you have DoH setup in the browser or you do that through the device settings for Quad 9? Maybe make sure you don’t have both enabled.

My phone is Realme C55 phone running Android 13. I have installed Brave from google play using the Aurora Store app, an alternative client for google play. I use Brave with the default settings and haven’t modified any. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Brave several times over the past years whenever I noticed a new update, but nothing has changed. The same 4 second, 5 second, and sometimes 8 second delays still occur. I don’t use VPNs while using Brave. I use Quad9 DNS and sometimes Cloudflare’s default DNS both only configured in my phone’s settings (not in Brave’s settings).

There is something important I want to note. In my previous description of the issue, I stated: “I have disabled both Google Play and Google Play Services (without root; they are just disabled, not uninstalled).” After double-checking, only half of that is correct. What I actually did was uninstall “Google Play” using “Universal Android Debloater” (https://github.com/0x192/universal-android-debloater), and disabled “Google Play Services” without uninstalling it. This means that “Google Play” is uninstalled and no longer exists on my phone, but “Google Play Services” is present but just disabled.

I also uninstalled 134 bloatware apps in total using both “Universal Android Debloater” and “Canta” (https://f-droid.org/packages/io.github.samolego.canta/). I have attached a text file in this comment containing the package names of all those bloatware apps that existed on my phone, in a Canta-supported preset format that I copied from “Canta” and pasted into a text file. This text file can be easily imported into “Canta” to remove those bloatware apps. I did this before installing and trying out Brave on this phone. Here is the text file of the Canta-supported preset containing the package names of all the bloatware apps that I uninstalled from my Realme C55 phone.

I have had this issue off and on with Brave on Android for months if not more, seems to have come back just now. This issue has made me really not want to use Brave on Android, no other browser has this issue. This should be priority 1, absolutely unacceptable bug to have. I am using a Samsung S25 Plus with stock ROM (as if I could even install a custom on on this garbage phone) and have DNS set to 1.1.1.1. I do not have this issue on my Linux desktop

Brave Support requested Android version, too.
