Hey everyone! So, I really love using the app — AdBlock, background play, everything works great. It’s perfect for listening to music or some random video essay while I’m scrolling on Pinterest.
But lately YouTube started auto-dubbing videos, and it’s super annoying. The web version doesn’t have the option to turn it off, and since my apps are set to English, YouTube keeps auto-dubbing a bunch of videos into English. I speak Portuguese and I actually want to watch content in Portuguese, but now I get this robotic dub instead.
Just like we have the option to block YouTube Shorts, I think it would be awesome to have an option to disable auto-dub too. I could switch to Firefox since there’s an extension for it, but the UI is kinda bad, it feels slower, and the search bar pops up every time I tap the screen. Not a great experience.
Anyway, it would be amazing to have this feature. Thanks for all the good work.
@Lemou where are you experiencing this? So far I haven’t found any content auto dubbed. But from what I see this is something that is chosen by the creator as they upload videos. For my own curiosity, would appreciate a link where you’re saying native is in Portuguese but it automatically plays in English.
I’m just wanting to experiment a bit. Just like I know some people are saying then they upload they have the checkbox. But when I go into my same area, it’s not there. But I do also see a difference where my channels aren’t monetized and theirs is.
I know some creators choose whether their videos get auto-dubbed, but I feel like a lot of them don’t even know it’s happening or don’t really understand how it works.
And it’s not just Portuguese videos getting auto-dubbed. I’m seeing it with Spanish, French, and even Japanese content. On PC it’s easy to turn it off, because the web version has the option and works fine, but on mobile there’s literally no way to switch back to the original audio — and that’s the annoying part
@Lemou hmm, I’m having to experiment a lot more. I just went to my iPhone and tried to watch on Brave and even though it says auto-dubbed, I’m only able to hear it in Portuguese. There is also not a way to switch the voice to English or anything.
Well, that’s until I told it to Request Desktop Site. But even then it was going to Portuguese language. It allows me to switch, but is in the original language by default.
I don’t have an Android handy to test on. I’ll have to find out what the moving pieces are on this.
Sorry, @Lemou, one more update. Think I see they do have an existing filter that helps. Just was testing on my Desktop and then on emulator and it seems to help on both.
Go to Settings → Shields → Content Filtering. In this they have Anti-AI Search
Can you try it and see if it yields results for you as well?
Kinda weird, because my sister has the same auto-dub issue too. I’ve checked all the settings to see if something could be messing with the audio, but can’t find anything.
Okay, it might just be coincidence from where I was toying with things. I am going to tag in @fanboynz though to see if he knows whether this is a filter that can be done and added to Shields at all. Or if he might have any guidance at all.
I’ve started encountering this problem quite frequently. My native languages are Russian and Ukrainian, but English is selected in my browser and account settings. The problem is noticeable when watching videos by Ukrainian and Russian-speaking bloggers who have auto-dubbed their videos into English.
I have to manually change the audio track to the original one.
That kind of happens to me too, but in reverse: English videos get the audio translated and dictated to portuguese (and from Brazil, from which I’m not from) by AI if played from a private window, or from a platform (like Instapaper) not connected to my Youtube account. Or in short, if I’m not logged in.
Not only that, but it goes the other way around in some portuguese youtube videos getting their titles in english with all the literal (mis)translations associated with it. Quite annoying really, but I’m betting it’s a youtube problem or at most a chrome problem, not Brave.
I heard all of them in the original portuguese (Brazil), not only in a normal browser window(logged in my YT account), but also in a private window (logged off from yt).
FYI I have my youtube interface language set to english.
I encounter the problem, that the language of auto-dubbed videos can be changed on desktop-devices, but on my Google Pixel 7a - Brave App I cannot find a setting to change the language back to original, where I would expect it (3-dots menu on the top right of every video - couldn’t find it elsewhere neither).
I find various requests regarding auto-dub here in the community and I think they also relate to the mobile version of brave, as in desktop I don’t encounter this issue
