Title: Split View: add a centered “Layout” button with width presets, custom ratio, swap, and separate-tab options
Problem
Split View currently divides space 50/50. That works for simple comparisons, but not when one side needs far more room than the other.
Example: Notion on the left (full-page reading/editing), an AI chatbot (Claude/ChatGPT) on the right (just a narrow typing/reply column). I want Notion at ~70-75%.
Dragging the divider is also unreliable: the cursor often catches the page’s own sidebar or UI elements, so precise resizing is hard.
Proposed solution
Keep equal split as the default, but add a small Layout button at the top-center of the split divider (visible on hover or always). Clicking it opens a menu:
| Option | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Equal split | 50/50 (default) |
| Left larger | 70/30 or 75/25 |
| Right larger | 30/70 or 25/75 |
| Custom ratio | Enter an exact % or slider (e.g. 20-80%) |
| Swap tabs | Left tab goes right, right tab goes left |
| Separate split view | Unsplit: tabs go back to normal individual tabs |
| Remember layout | Save the ratio per tab pair, and/or save custom presets |
Better divider dragging (complements the menu)
- Wider invisible hit area on the divider
- Overlay that captures pointer events while dragging, so page content can’t intercept the cursor
- Double-click the divider to reset to 50/50
- Optional keyboard shortcut to cycle presets
Why it matters
- Makes Split View far more useful for research, note-taking, coding docs, and AI-chat workflows
- All layout controls in one central, discoverable place
- Removes the accidental-drag problem entirely
- Fewer clicks, higher efficiency
