After updating the browser to version v1.82.161, it began using about 30-40% more RAM per tab than before the update.
While in the previous version the card took up, say, 700-800 MB of RAM - now it can reach up to 3-4 GB…
This is completely incomprehensible and abnormal. With 16-32GB of RAM in a computer, one browser tab can use about 3-4-5-6 GB of RAM. The previous version worked without any problems, but the current version doesn’t allow for comfortable use of the browser on Windows 11.
Description of the issue: How can this issue be reproduced?
Okay, so I figured it out. In the latest version of Brave for PC – Win 11 – Brave has a problem with extension support and memory management. When there are no extensions installed in the browser, everything works fine. Memory is freed when it should, tabs don’t generate RAM usage, nor does it increase RAM usage. However, when even Ublock, Tapermonkey, or any other add-on is installed (in my case, the default is just Ublock + Tampermonkey for one page with one script), Brave starts to go haywire. Similarly, with Ublock alone, the same thing happens. The more you view a given page, the more Brave starts using RAM. And this usage grows and grows and grows… to absurd levels. Brave doesn’t free this memory when you close a tab, nor does it free it when memory saving should be working – it simply keeps it occupied all the time, which causes a tragic memory drain. At some point, you simply have to restart the browser. Because it’s unusable. Plus, the current update seems to be using more RAM than it did two or three days ago.
I would Disable and Remove uBlock Origin extension. Clear data stuff (Advanced tab, for All time) everything except Passwords, Shields settings, and Autofill. Exit / Quit everything, and Restart the Windows OS computer two times in succession.
I’ve already done this. And there’s practically no change; the browser behaves the same. Ublock itself is irrelevant—there’s a general problem with memory management and, I think, add-ons in general. Ublock was just an example. I tested the same setup with my add-ons, even on Edge, and the problem doesn’t occur at all, so it’s probably a bug in the browser version.
If your memory stressed (lots of tabs/a few extensions), enabling memory saver in settings is an easy win. I’ll test Brave in its default settings, without any extensions. uBO is an option for those who need it still.
This is happening for me as well, on Windows 11 Brave 1.82.161 (Official Build) (64-bit) Chromium: 140.0.7339.80. In my normal tab setup, RAM usage never exceeded 3-4 GB, but now it easily goes over 6GB with the same setup in place. The only extensions I use are Reader View and Tab Session Manager, to save my Tab Session file in case I ever need it for another PC. In any case, this significantly higher than normal RAM usage only began happening after the most recent update to 1.82.161 a few days ago.
yes .. i am facing this problem too … before brave recent update i use 30 browser and ram use was 65 to 75 ..but now i use 23 browser but ram use 98 to 99 .. i have 32gb ram and ryzen 7 processor … please fix this asap ..
