Silent profile corruption

Title: Silent profile corruption causes permanent “oops” redirect on two major sites for 2+ months, with no user warning or recovery path

Description of the issue:

I have used Brave as my primary browser for approximately 15 years. I am reporting this not to request support, but so the failure mode is documented for other users and engineers.

Symptoms (persisted over two months):

  • The world’s largest video site redirected to its generic “oops” error page on every load
  • A major finance portal failed to load in the same manner
  • The Shields panel (lion icon) appeared greyed out and unresponsive on affected sites
  • Settings deep-links silently redirected to the “Get Started” onboarding page instead of opening their target section
  • Profile management showed the existing profile with no options available

What ruled out the obvious causes:

  • Both sites loaded correctly in a Private window
  • Both sites loaded correctly in a freshly created profile
  • No extensions installed
  • Shields set to Standard across all categories
  • All components current (Brave Default Adblock Filters at latest version)
  • Site data for both domains already absent
  • Full browser restarts and unexpected crashes produced no change
  • Same sites worked fine on mobile

Conclusion: The original profile was silently corrupted. Nothing in Brave indicated this. There was no warning, no diagnostic, no recovery prompt, and no way to discover the true cause without systematically eliminating every other possibility over many hours.

The actual complaint: Corruption happens in software. What should not happen in 2026 is that a browser corrupts a paying community’s primary workspace and says absolutely nothing about it. Two months of lost access to major sites, spent debugging a problem the product itself refused to acknowledge.

Request:

  1. Detect profile corruption and display a clear, actionable warning rather than redirecting users to empty onboarding screens.
  2. Provide a built-in profile backup/export mechanism. For long-term users, the browser is the workspace.
  3. Establish a real support channel. Community forums alone are not adequate for silent data-layer failures.

This matches previously reported cases of profiles being reset or wiped following updates, including reports of total loss of profiles and passwords after a corruption message. The pattern persists.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary):

  1. Use an established profile (multi-year profile with accumulated settings/state) as the default browsing profile.
  2. Navigate to either of the two affected major sites; observe the persistent “oops” redirect / blank failure on every load.
  3. Open brave://settings via a deep-link; observe it silently landing on the “Get Started” onboarding page.
  4. Open the Shields panel on an affected site; observe the lion icon greyed out and unresponsive.
  5. Open profile management; observe the existing profile listed with no available actions.
  6. Confirm the same sites load normally in a Private window and in a newly created profile, isolating the fault to the original profile’s state.
