As a user, I want to press ‘/’ on the homepage to instantly focus the search bar, so that I can start typing a search query immediately without using the mouse.

Yes we absolutely need this.
Are you saying you want to move the focus to the address bar? Because the homepage (or new tab page), when opened, already puts the focus in the address bar. You shouldn’t need to press anything. That said, you can use Ctrl + L on any page to jump focus to the address bar.
The keyboard shortcut used for this can also be changed in brave://settings/system/shortcuts.
If the behavior you’re looking for is different than what I’m describing please elaborate and if you can share an example site that would be helpful as well.

I usually prefer to keep the toolbar hidden for a cleaner browsing experience, but I’ve noticed two issues:
When using the Home Page: If the toolbar is hidden, the search box on the page doesn’t automatically get focus. I have to manually click it every time before typing, and there doesn’t seem to be a keyboard shortcut to focus it.
Suggestion: Please automatically focus the search box on the Home Page when opening a new tab, even if the toolbar is hidden. Alternatively, make this behavior configurable so users can choose whether to enable it.
When using a Blank Page: If the new tab page is set to a blank page and the toolbar is hidden, there’s no visible search box or address bar to type into, making it inconvenient to start a search or enter a URL.
Suggestion: When opening a new blank tab, automatically reveal the toolbar and place the focus on the address bar, so users can start typing immediately.
Overall, I think the focus behavior should adapt to the selected new tab page type, ensuring that users can always start typing right away without extra clicks, even when they prefer to keep the toolbar hidden.
