New install, old profile, no passwords

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. install new Linux OS

  2. Install Brave (with command line for Brave website) in terminal

  3. Delete Brave-Browser directories in .cache and .config

  4. Copy Brave-Browser directories from backup

  5. Start Brave form the Menu

  6. Select password manager, no passwords listed

Expected result:

Hundreds of passwords should appear

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Brave Browser 139.1.81.136

Additional Information:

This approach has always worked in previous new installations, but not this time.

The profile is not corrupted. The password file is present. (compare between backup and this file is equal.)

What am I missing? Any hints appreciated, as I am dead in the water without the passwords. I got access to this forum by resetting my password

@Max_G guessing would be related to https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/29808985123085-Sensitive-data-storage

Installing new Linux means new encryption key. So even if you have the files, they can’t be accessed because you no longer have the key.

Thank you for the speedy reply… I should have mentioned that I also copied the .ssh directory over (in order to log into all remote machines), which seemingly does not matter for this case.

Thank you for the links, I read theses… and took inspiration from this post: Keyrings problem - #9 by uHuH BUT, instead of deleting these, I renamed the existing directory and copied the keyrings from the backup; opened brave and viola, the passwords are back.

Again, you saved my day; much appreciated.

Hello Max_G, I’m glad I was helpful. Have a nice day
