@craxton this is the new design. This isn’t a bug or anything.
Even just reading through the most recent would have been enough. But otherwise it’s good just to use simple terms, like “new tab page” or “top sites” to see what it comes, always sorting by most recent.
@norioes at least for now, just disable it at brave://flags. But keep in mind most of the things in flags are experimental or just temporary. Most likely this flag will be removed at some point in the future. No idea how long until they remove it, but just keep in mind most things there are only there for a little while after changes are made just in case there’s any issues people experience.

So you can go disable, but at some point you may have to “deal with it” so to speak.
@Meeker-Morgan as Kanga mentioned, it’s a new update. For now you can disable it via brave://flags but eventually that will go away. The newer design is a lot of things people have been requesting for a while. It frees up a lot more space, allows us to have more favorites visible at once, etc.
Anyway, if you disable it will give you the old one. But I want to be very clear that eventually it will probably force you into it.
