Know how to prevent ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS?

Description of the issue:
In Brave on Android, in Samsung DeX mode, going to gmail.com results in this error:

After I clear gmail cookies it works… for.. a day, maybe? Probably till the next time I plug in again. Works fine in phone mode. It’s only when I’m in DeX mode (btw if not familiar, that’s just the mode the phone goes into when you connect to an external screen - “Desktop eXperience” or something)

Clearing cookies is really annoying btw! Here’s the steps for that:

  1. open Settings
  2. click Site settings
  3. click All sites
  4. click Search (magnifying glass in top-right)
  5. type “google”
  6. click the “google.com” line
  7. scroll up and down through the list of “[something].google.com” websites, till you find “mail.google.com” and click that. (There’s no search on this screen for some reason.) (Oh and the list isn’t sorted alphabetically either, so good luck!)
  8. click the garbage can icon (under Usage)
  9. click Delete
  10. OH also there’s usually 2 “mail.google.com” rows hidden in that list, (one for http and one for https I guess), so go ahead and repeat steps 7,8,9
  11. finally, try “gmail.com” again
  12. oh right, now you gotta re-login to google:
  1. click your account icon
  2. enter your password
  3. click Continue on passkey screen
  4. use fingerprint sensor on phone
  5. ugh, click OK on the “something went wrong” screen
  6. finally you’re in!

Phew!

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. (Be in Brave, in DeX mode)
  2. Go to “gmail.com

I wish the repro steps and the workaround steps would trade places!

Expected result:
I’d expect the Gmail page to load successfully, without having to clear cookies all the time.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Application version: Brave 1.80.115, Chromium 138.0.7204.97
Operating system: Android 14; Build/UP1A.231005.007

Mobile Device details
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 (running in DeX mode, which is just when you plug in to another screen via HDMI)

…Anyone else have this issue? It’s been driving me crazy, enough to actually write it all down here lol

@DanDoes

DeX mode - “Desktop eXperience” or something - error occurs (but no error when not connected to external monitor via HDMI)

Thanks for that.

General info, basically, an effort by browser and website, to complete the tasks, fails . . . yet the two parties keep trying (the following ref. material, may not help much):

But, I wonder if “a/the desktop side” (Linux OS tools) of Android is in effect, for DeX mode?

Meanwhile . . . Important routine: Clear cookies and cache and then be sure to do a complete Quit of BB, followed by a “forced” / “hard” Restart:

Tips regarding Brave Shields:

I have more success, with:

  • Brave Shields UP
  • Either Allow All Cookies or Block 3rd Party Cookies, but NOT Blocking All Cookies
  • Allowing JavaScripts from specific sources, but NOT Allowing All JavaScripts
  • Trackers & Ads treatment: Aggressive (at first), and then incrementally relaxing that setting
  • Fingerprinting (aka footprinting) blocking: Strict (at first), and then incrementally relaxing that setting

I almost NEVER use:

  • All of Brave Shields UP
  • All of Brave Shields DOWN

PS about Google Eco-Sphere/System - several domains involved, from which scripts need to be allowed; example:

  • gmail.com
  • google.com
  • googleapis.com
  • googlevideo.com
  • gstatic.com
  • youtube.com
  • ytimg.com
