Is the Setting to Delete Browsing data working?

Dear Brave Support Team,

Description of the issue:

I have Brave Browser set (and I double-checked this) to delete browsing history, cookies, cache, etc when I shut it down. But after shutdown: 1) Ccleaner reports a number of files to delete in the C:\Users\******\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Cache\ directories and similar – files with today’s date.

Steps to reproduce the issue:

    1. Open Brave Browser, go to Settings > Privacy And security > Delete browsing data > on exit
  1. Check all the types of files to delete and click Save.

  2. Shutdown Brave browser.

  3. Start Ccleaner and go to Custom Clean > Junk. For Brave Browser 77MB (824 files) are listed as needing to be deleted.

  4. In File Explorer, navigate to the Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Cache directory and display contents to see many, many files with today’s date.

Device information:

  • Windows Home 11 release 24H2

  • Brave Browser version: Version 1.83.118 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Expected result:

No files in the cache folder with data created today.

Actual result:

Many, many files with current date in the subdirectories under Cache.

Do I misunderstand something? If so, how do I check that everything appropriate was in fact deleted?

Thank you for your support!

Best regards,

Could it be from an older profile? Therefore whatever you do in Brave is irrelevant and not removing what you want?

Are there any settings trying to override it?

I personally don’t use that function, I turn on “Forget me when I close this site” under brave://settings/shields as a master switch for all websites.

As well as under brave://settings/content/siteData (to get there, Privacy & Security > Site and Shield Settings > Additional Content Settings > On-device Site Data) & switch from Allow sites to save data on your device to Delete data sites have saved to your device when you close all windows plus any sites that I don’t mind cookies sticking around on, I go to Site Settings (the switch icon in the URL bar next to the bookmarks icon) Cookies and site data > Manage on-device site data then choose with the hamburger menu the appropriate option.

You could also check what else is going on by going to brave://settings/content/all (Privacy & Security > Site and Shield Settings > View permissions and data stored across sites) and/or brave://settings/content/braveShields (Privacy & Security > Site and Shield Settings > Shields Status)

Anyway Welcome to the Community, hope this helps & FYI, I’m just a user too
