Internal domain does not resolve with Brave

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:

I have a registered domain which I set to resolve to my internal ip. I am trying to setup a private network where I can access my internal site no matter where I am. I already have a VPN setup through Tailscale and everything works fine. All my sites are accessible when I’m away from the home with my VPN enabled.

The issue, however, is my sites are not reachable using Brave and only Brave. They are reachable using Chrome or dedicated apps. I’ve also done an nslookup on my Android and it correctly resolves to my internal ip. I get a response when I ping my site from my phone as well. What is preventing Brave from resolving my address?

The things I’ve tried:

  • Disabled “Secure DNS” - did not work
  • Enabled “Secured DNS” but chose Cloudflare as the DNS provider - did not work
  • Went to brave://net-internals#dns and cleared host cache - did not work
  • Went to brave://net-internals#sockets, flushed socket pools and closed idle sockets - did not work
  • Cleared my browser cache - did not work

How can this issue be reproduced? You can’t because this is internal

  1. Turned off my wifi or leave the house

  2. Enable my VPN

  3. Visit my internal site

Expected result: Internal site to resolve
