Improve Anti-Porn List

I don’t know what list does “Blocklists Anti-Porn” utilize but it appears to be out-dated or not updated frequently, rendering it useless for the purpose it was implemented for.

Here’s a suggestion - Import OISD’s List (Big List) to replace or support brave’s default Anti-porn list since its updated hourly, its open source, and has almost zero false positives. This list also blocks child exploitation materials as a bonus.

Heres The link to import OISD’s Anti-Porn List

Services like Mullvad VPN’s Family DNS uses this list so you know its pretty good.

People that are anti-porn are so strange, in the very basis of your ideological doctrine. If you don’t want to watch porn, don’t watch it. The notion that it is going to just randomly pop-up is laughable to say the least. Anyone who is accessing porn is doing so intentionally. Get a grip lady.

@MrBustANut93 you have no idea for what reason they are asking for these sites to be filtered. It could perhaps be that they are looking for a way to ensure their children aren’t able to view explicit content when browsing online. It could be that someone in the house or they themselves are dealing with an addiction to it and are looking for any kind of stop-gap big or small to help prevent relapse.

Or it could be none of your business at all. Please be respectful to the people here on our forum.

@Druid I will reach out to some of our Shields devs and see what they might be able to do. Thank you for posting.

I had a look at the OISD, is specifically DNS, given its quite large there maybe some performance issues including it. Also every dns rule is basically doubled

0.011.free.fr
*.0.011.free.fr
0.123.free.fr
*.0.123.free.fr
...

This is :backhand_index_pointing_up: precisely the reason. I have children below age of 12 who use android smartphone and laptop for school.

Don’t blame me for wishing and hoping for a better and safer browsing experience for my children @MrBustANut93

Also, The feature request was directed towards the awesome devs, so as far as @MrBustANut93 is concerned, this :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Hello @fanboynz

Maybe there is some way we could merge the list, since the OISD list is known for having almost Zero false positives and for being updated every 2 hours. My honest experience is that brave’s default list only blocks popular NSFW websites and not those that are not listed directly in the search engine results.

OISD is essentially a community maintained list where people submit the url they come across as NSFW, which is then verified by OISD devs for false positive and that it meets the ceiteria for being identified as NSFW, and then added to the DNS / Adblock List. Its the Best in Class (Most Antimalware software that comes with NSFW filtering option (Kaspersky and BitDefender Internet Security) utilize the OISD list.

I believe the oisd list comes on various forms (like uBlock compactible, Adguard Compactible, DNS Filter compactible, etc). Check the dropdown menu on their page here

But alas, I believe you would know better on whats best.

Thanks for considering my humble request @Mattches

P.S. Brave is by far the best browser that parents can give their children, its easy on smartphone battery, keeps pesky ads and pop-ups away, I love the Bloat-Free Youtube experience without subscribe/Like buttons or comments or recommended content or even shorts. So thanks devs.

Much Love.

@fanboynz To be fair the brave’s default nsfw list is borderline outdated. I saw the oisd (big) list and it appears to be reputable among masses and as its dev claims - ‘updated atleast once a day’.

Look at it this way-

Brave’s Anti-Porn list is disabled by default. Only limited users use it who specifically enable the filter.

Now If Brave is advertising a list as ‘Anti-Porn’, it might as well be up-to-date and comprehensive, like oisd big list, and not the current hotchpotch.

As far as performance is concerned,

For testing, On android (6 Gigs RAM) I imported the oisd big list in brave as @Druid provided link and honestly, there is no difference in the speed of my browser, or atleast not that I can notice. I also noticed that oisd is much, MUCH more effective than brave’s default list.

Bottomline,

My argument to replace the brave’s current anti-porn list with oisd big list would be that, If you want to provide a service, why not ensure that it’s the best in class? The list is not enabled by default regardless. I mean oisd list is opensource, free and updated daily, not to mention that it is used by companies like mullvad and kaspersky.

And people who enable this specific content filter are indeed looking for what this list offers, which brave’s present list does not offer, and that is comprehensive nsfw filter.

+1 from me.

@Druid sorry if I’m going to make you repeat, but did you try adding it as they instruct? In the dropdown list is Brave.

I just want to confirm you’re able to get it working that way? Or does it not work appropriately?

Guess I’m trying to confirm overall whether this is just a request about it being a default option or if there’s a bit of a disconnect in terms of it not really working to begin with.

In regard to this, usually having parental controls on a device level rather than browser level is going to be better, including setting it up to use particular DNS. When Shields blocks sites, it still gives options to continue. It’s “some” level of protection in terms of things opening up but they would still be able to continue on to the content or even disable Shields if they wished to see it.

The whole point of this feature request is to deprecate the present anti-nsfw list available in brave content filter list (which I believe is extremely small, not updated frequently and limited to blocking top websites only as opposed to all nsfw websites as the name suggests “Anti-Porn”), and replace it with oisd list for all users of brave.

I already use oisd list on dns level, and I’m very satiafied with it.

I do. However, I thought opening this request would bring to the devs attention that the present list is insufficient so why not just replace it with another list that is free to use, has almost 0 false positives, updated atleast once a day and popular companies use this list by default as their anti-nsfw list, because the list is THAT good.

@Adam22 Hit the nail with this :backhand_index_pointing_down:

I would like to not have to campaign - and bother @fanboynz - with requests to uproot an entrenched, big oisd list.

Presently, using more strict anti-porn lists is an individual option ← I prefer that; and the instructions provided by @Saoiray are easily followed.

Possibly a Hi-Strength Anti-Porn Filtering switch can be installed at brave://settings/shields/filters - thus providing a simpler option, and thus allowing people to Opt-in / Opt-out.

I’d just manually add the list, there maybe some performance issues running into such large list (esp for someone enabling the list on lower end HW like phones)
