How to remove AI (in brave search)

I’d like to completely remove or delete the AI assistant because it keeps turning on automatically.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Hi,

In Brave Search settings, there is an option to disable AI answers that appear automatically in search results.

  1. Go to https://search.brave.com/settings.
  2. Find & disable “Answer with AI”.

This will get rid of the AI answers that appear automatically for some searches. However some AI features may still remain turned on, you can disable most of them too separately.

Thanks.

Those settings are immediately put back after one single search. :downcast_face_with_sweat:

I do this all the time and want it to be removed completely from my computer, I do not want or use it.

That’s interesting.

Search settings are saved locally on your device, so something might be clearing it. Can you check if “Forget me when I close this site” is enabled in Brave Shields? It should be disabled.

If it’s disabled, also check Browser Settings > Site Settings > On-device site data and select “Allow a site to save data on your device”.

This should hopefully solve this issue.

Yes, this was indeed enabled. I will try again. Thanks !

But my main question was how to remove this function completely (on Linux) ..

(I am not allowed to send a video-file for whatever reason)

In Brave Search specifically, you cannot fully remove the AI stuff, but as previously mentioned you can prevent it from appearing automatically for some searches. However, the Ask button and https://search.brave.com/ask will always be accessible unless you use Brave Shield’s element blocker to remove them.

If you want to learn more about element blocking: https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/360018039072-How-do-I-use-the-Content-Filter-to-block-elements-on-a-webpage

As far as I know, there is no button to fully disable AI in Brave Search. You can submit a feature request for it though if you want this.

Also Brave Search AI is different from the built-in AI inside the browser. You cannot really disable that either, but there are a lot more options to hide it.

Well first let’s just clear one thing up real quick, the AI on Brave Search is not installed on your computer. That is a website, it’s like Google’s Gemini responses in Google Search, it’s a website and thus not installed on your computer. Even Leo in Brave Browser itself, is just a front end unless you actually bound it to a local model.

it is a shame to see in 2026 someone want to remove Leo ai from use. even if you question a result the search results using ai on Brave are served up in seconds and you don’t have to filter and open multiple articles to find and answer. i sure hope Mick111 you’ll reconsider. just think about it and ask your questions in a casual style. i hope you reconsider. Brave is the best privacy preserving browser i have ever used and Leo ai i feel the same way about. not perfect but near perfect and you can always ask for Leo ai to “elaborate” or “try again”.

Everyone is allowed their personal preference. I don’t like using AI either, and I waited decades for it, only to be disappointed in a variety of ways (of which I do not plan to share nor get into).

No one wants to be forced to use something they don’t wish to use, and that’s their right. I certainly don’t, so I do understand their post and don’t need to ask for their reasoning either.

Every AI search uses a small amount of data centre power, but typically much more than that used by a non-AI search. That power quickly grows to massive amounts when multiplied by millions of searches. If you are not interested in the AI result for whatever reason, it makes sense to disable it to avoid the unnecessary power waste.

That’s nonsense. I actually installed the “language model” update myself (by accident), naively thinking it was for translating languages.
