How can I get rid of the "Welcome to Brave Profiles" tab that appears when I open the browser?

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Make a guess profile.

  2. Close the browser

  3. Open the browser

Expected result: to get a “Welcome to Brave profiles” tab that wasn’t there before. Every time when I open the browser. This is so annoying and it completely locks me out from using Brave because of the cold turkey extension.

Brave Version: 1.83.118 - latest

Additional Information:

I’m using cold turkey extension and it automatically closes down the browser because of it. Even if I click on my profile, it still closes the browser because it doesn’t detect the extension when it starts. I want to undo this change but I can’t find it anywhere. Please if possible let me know what I can do. I did it by clicking on the Guess Mode but it won’t go away.

What’s the point of this tab if there is only one profile, and why won’t it go away? Is it possible to patch this? Maybe with an update? Because it’s impossible to use the browser unless I undo it somehow. Thank you!

@Eliah99

There should be a selection - “Show on startup” - also in that window (your screenshot):

. . . but that checkbox does not show?! In a Brave Browser New Window, go to ‘brave://local-state/’ and search for “show_picker_on_startup”

What is the “value” for that: “true” or “false” ? (You must not try to edit what you see in that window.)

Your Cold Turkey extension might be a problem.

@Mattches

Same issue from September 2024:

The Show on startup option does appear afaik. Just checked on macOS and Windows:

i don’t have that, so it’s probably off. I can’t access it because after 2-3 seconds it automatically closes, as cold turkey doesn’t detect an extension, even if I click on the “work” profile.
Can you patch the new update to have that option for everybody? Otherwise I won’t be able to use a browser for the next 5 months.

And why is that I don’t have that option but others have it? That’s on you 100% the brave team, so I’m expecting you guys to oatch it. It doesn’t even make sense to have this window when obviously there’s only one profile.
Just please make it boot directly into the browser.

I hope that it can update to the next version in the background, when the browser isn’t open. Right?

Otherwise, what can I even do? It makes no sense to have this tab when I didn’t ask for it. I just clicked on a guess account out if curiosity and now it won’t go away. This is annoying and not needed.

Look above. No such thing exists. This tab should appear to everybody.

And why does it say Solved? This thread isn’t Solved, the GitHub thread isn’t solved either.

If the cold turkey were to be the problem then I would have had a problem by now since I’ve been using it for years.

Cold Turkey can’t mess with the Brave code to make an option NOT appear. It’s not a hacking tool, just a cmd program with an extension that kills tasks when certain parameters are met.

So will you make an update to solve it, or do I have to reinstall my PC from scratch and spend an entire day or even two to reinstall all the tools, drivers and games and then change the browser?

Looks like , just like Windows 11, you’re more busy with implementing AI and pushing new but not-needed features than to make the Browser work properly. The GitHub thread is literally one year old and you still didn’t fix it and then you blame a mere extension. It’s unreal. Where is the patch for this? I can’t believe I’ve been recommending this browser to thousands of people and you barely bother to help.

You could try starting Brave via SPB.

If that allows you to start Brave without cold turkey then I am guessing the next step will be creating a seperate template :

spb --new-template noturkey --standard

Then close the browser and start using your new template in edit mode :

spb --edit-template noturkey --standard

Essentially this will create a new set of settings for Brave on you machine.

I do not know enough about how Cold turkey works to know if it will stop this approach from working. Please report back. But it is worth a try and if it is not doing what you need it is easy enough to remove SPB.

@Eliah99 it was the weekend, just getting back online today.

Sounds like it could be a bug, could be something with your setup. Either way, we’ll need to do some troubleshooting to figure it out. I’ve asked some team members about this and I will likely open an issue for this, but in the meantime can you please try downloading and running the Beta build of the browser? The Beta will download/install/run separately from your current installation – nothing will be overwritten and you’re welcome to uninstall it after testing.

The reason I’m asking you to perform this test is because when you run the Beta, and create more than one Profile, the close/relaunch it, I want to see if that check box appears in the profile manager window.

It’s impossible to do this because Cold Turkey blocks any other browser.

Also I don’t care, I reinstalled Windows from scratch over this. Let me know if you know how to disable the option to create more profiles. That would be helpful for me and for the people who use this extension. If you want to help.

I tried with this but it didn’t work. Blocking Guest profile still allows one to create profiles.

What would be the reg command to block the entire option to create profiles?? Thanks.
