During Spotify playback the next song stops after the first few seconds when the screen is locked

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue: Playback on spotify.com stops a few seconds into the next song when the screen is locked/turned off. When the screen is on, playback continues as expected.

This block from Spotify effectively makes Brave’s ad blocker useless for Spotify because Spotify Web is not usable on mobile without keeping the device unlocked at all times.

This is also a privacy issue, because it suggests Spotify can detect whether the user has locked the screen. That information should NOT be shared with Spotify if the user does not want to share it. It could be used for fingerprinting.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Go to spotify.com in mobile and set it to Desktop Mode.

  2. Start playing a song and lock the screen

  3. Wait until it finishes. It will move to next song

  4. If screen is still locked and turned off, next song will play a few seconds and then it will stop.

Expected result: Spotify playback to continue playing next song.

Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave 1.89.135, Chromium 147.0.7727.49

Additional Information:

Did I post this to wrong place? I can’t be the only one who is having this issue

@rogerthebat you posted to the right place – can you confirm that the issue still occurs in the latest build of the browser (should be v1.89.143)?

Yes I can confirm that it is still happening. Verified with Brave v1.89.143, Chromium 147.0.2727.117

It’s suppose the screen not locked may by using night vision mode

Looks like we can reproduce this on our end. I’ve filed this on our Github here for review:

how you are able to listen to the library section in spotify?

@Mattches Perfect, thanks a lot!

As noted in Github issue already, similar behavior can be seen on desktop as well. Though I didn’t spend much time on desktop to reproduce it since on desktop I use another solution to block the ads, but it does behave somewhat strange and probably due to this exact checks happening on the page.

@Safeguard-Retool If you are asking how you can use Spotify on mobile without it pushing you to app and all, you need to set page mode to Desktop (Settings dot → Check the Desktop Site checkbox) and then it will behave like a desktop. UI of Spotify in Desktop mode is kinda annoying but it does the job.

I see that, but i might always need to zoom for clicking on certain music, playlist and album.

I think i am good with my YT Music
