Critical UI/UX Feedback for Brave Desktop

Subject: Windows Desktop UI Concerns: Reduced Space Efficiency, New Borders, and Detached Tab Design

Dear Esteemed Brave Development Team,

I am a long-time, loyal user of Brave on the Windows Desktop platform, and I highly value Brave’s performance and commitment to privacy.

I am writing to provide critical feedback regarding recent user interface (UI) changes observed in the latest updates. These changes, in my opinion, significantly reduce the visual efficiency and overall user experience (UX) for desktop users.

1. Vertical Space Efficiency Issue (Top Bar & Tab Height)

The recent update has resulted in an increased thickness (height) of the Top Bar and Tab area.

  • Negative Impact: On a desktop environment, vertical screen real estate is a premium asset. This increased thickness directly reduces the viewing area available for web content, which runs counter to the goal of a productive desktop browser.

  • Suggestion: Desktop UI design should prioritize being slim and compact. I strongly suggest considering reverting or reducing the height of the Top Bar and Tabs to maximize content display area, ensuring comfort and efficiency for productivity-focused users.

2. Tab Design Quality (From Compact to Detached/Floating)

The shape of the tabs has changed from the previously compact design to a fully rounded ‘oval’ or ‘pill’ shape, making them appear detached.

  • Ideal Old Design: Tabs were only rounded at the top corners (left & right) and had a flat bottom edge that blended seamlessly (integrated) with the address/menu bar below, creating a highly compact look.

  • Problematic New Design: The new design looks like a “floating button,” rounded on all sides. This breaks visual cohesion, introduces unnecessary gaps or separation lines, and gives the impression of a less refined or amateurish design.

Conclusion:

The current UI updates feel like a step backward in terms of efficiency and visual cleanliness for Windows desktop users. We hope Brave can re-prioritize the principles of space efficiency, visual cohesion, and minimalist design.

Thank you for your time and consideration in evaluating this critical feedback from the desktop user community.

Sincerely, [Djack Vanjava]
