@Drakozorro

I use a VPN service - on a Mac. Might help in principle:

I have Secure DNS Enabled. And, Select DNS provider is set to OS default (when available)

And, in the Operating System (“OS”) network location settings > DNS server number settings, I manually enter the VPN DNS servers’ IP addresses.

@Saoiray will likely know more, esp. re Android.

Thanks. Yes I have the same. But I want to insert i to brave settings as well when not connected to ny home network.

@Drakozorro It does not accept plain IP addresses. It expects a DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT) endpoint URL.

So if you’re trying to use ones like 103.86.96.100 it wouldn’t work because it’s NordVPN’s standard DNS server.

You would need a DoH URL, such as * https://dns.nordvpn.com/dns-query (if NordVPN supported DoH directly)

-NOTE

I put the idea of “if supported directly,” because I believe people have said it’s not available. If I’m seeing things right, they do not offer DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT) endpoints for manual configuration

That said, I didn’t spend a lot of time looking. You could always try researching more yourself or try to contact NordVPN to see if they can offer more information.

If you’re using their VPN, it should be putting you through their DNS servers at that time anyway, as long as you’re not overriding it. And if you are changing the DNS away, you might be lowering the protection they offer by opening to potential leaks.

Thanks.

But yes, they do support DoT. I have dot enabled on my router with nordvpn using port 853.

@Mattches when you get a chance, any insight you could offer?

@Drakozorro I still want to double down on what I was saying. Definitely would recommend you reaching out to NordVPN to see what guidance they can offer.

Thanks. Yeah they are telling me to use the app which I also do.

I am now using the app, router and android private dns settings. But brave unfortunately doesnt support adding nordvpn, just the ones already listed in the app. Been using cloudflare for a few years but revently changed to nord.

@Drakozorro I believe you need to use a DoH URL like https://dns1.nordvpn.com/dns-query as @Saoiray mentioned previously.
