Cannot enable Private Window with Tor in Brave Settings anymore

Hello

I recently noticed that after updating Brave, the “New Private Window with Tor” option no longer appears in the settings for the Tor window. The dedicated toggle under Settings → Privacy & Security → Tor windows is missing, and I can’t open a Tor-based private window any more. I’ve tested clearing cache, switching profiles, and verifying network access, but the option still doesn’t show. Since I rely on that Tor mode for enhanced privacy, could you help me check if there’s a policy change, network block, or version issue that has removed or hidden this feature?

Brave Version: v1.84.132

I don’t really use TOR but it’s true I don’t see it for myself either, so you’re not alone in not seeing that functionality, and I’m not on Windows

But looking in the Help Center and Resources > Release Notes and corresponding links on GitHub is… well, not making it clear to me, if you want to take a look…

@Mattches could you please clarify?

I’m not sure how to even “Enable TOR via Admin Policy” if that’s something we have to do (not that I personally need it but yeah (for OP), confusing at least for me).

Corresponding GitHub info:

Not seeing this on my end – on both Windows 11 and macOS Tahoe 26.0.1 the Tor window options appear both in the main menu and the Tor options in Privacy and Security are there as well:

:backhand_index_pointing_up: What this is saying is that if you disable Tor functionality via Group Policy, there was a bug where the tor options in brave://settings/privacy would still appear even though it shouldn’t. This bug was fixed but isn’t relevant here.

Can you both please clarify whether or not you have any policies enabled or disabled in the browser? You can check by going to the brave://policy page and see if anything is listed here.

Mine says TorDisabled → Not set.
(Assuming I’m looking in the right place/right option):

and I’m on MacBook M3 Pro with Sequoia 15.7.1
and yeah not seeing it in brave://settings/privacy
OR the Hamburger menu.

NOTE: Nothing showed up unless I did click the button Show policies with no value set so I guess I did more work than necessary :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Mine also says TorDisabled → Not set, in the Policy page

So what now? How do we fix it?

I’m also having this problem, I use Windows 11 Home and I can’t access those administrative templates, before update I could turn on and off private windows with Tor, now it doesn’t even show up in the settings menu. Happened after the aformentioned 1.84.132 update, it was normal before it.

Also in brave://policy, it says TorDisabled → Not set, and as I said I can’t change this page in any way.

Brave 1.84.132 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium: 142.0.7444.60

Windows 11 Home

I’m in no way a coder or expert, but maybe the update to fix the previous bug with Tor now defaults into Tor needing to be manually activated or disabled by default in machines without policy editor? Just conjecture on my part, though…

I am having the same problem. The options for tor in the privacy settings has completely vanished

damn , and I thought I was the only one with the issue.

Is there ever going to be a fix for it? or is TOR gone completely forever?

Be happy it’s not just you, and clearly it is a bug, next time Mattches is available (I’m sure) he’ll make a report of it (I’d say there is plenty enough evidence at this point), or if you or anyone else in this thread have a GitHub account, you can create an issue here: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues

More evidence from another user: Was Tor functionality removed?
