Brave keeps opening new tabs when launching app

Description of the issue: when opening Brave, it keeps opening a new tab

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3. just opening the app. If I swap to a different app then go back, it’s fine, but if I tap the shortcut to open it, half the time it just starts on a new tab instead of the most recent tab

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

Expected result:

Reproduces how often:

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu): Samsung Galaxy S24 ultra on Android 16 and Samsung One UI 8.5

Brave version Brave 1.91.171, Chromium 149.0.7827.103

Additional Information: I have so far attempted cache and cookie clear, as well as uninstalled and reinstalled the browser. This only happens on my phone. My laptop and desktop are not experiencing this issue.

Possibly the Related issues tab, further down your topic page, here, is worth a look:

Yeah, just now looked through those. People been dealing with this since 2024 it seems, but none had a fix.

I’ll keep reading through them to see if I can find something, but it’s looking like a legacy bug that hasn’t been patched yet.

@Mattches

OP is investigating the ‘Related’ topics below … but no fix found:

Brave keeps opening new tabs when launching app - #3 by Acanis

Though the following post (by leh) might have the fix:

Brave keeps opening new tabs when launching app - #5 by leh

In Mobile I can’t seem to find that.

Nope, new tabs go to the home page. And yeah, still happening.

I think it might be tied to a one UI or Android update as I think this started around the time my phone was pushed an update

Ok. This isn’t the cause: Settings > New Tab Page > Opening Screen.

Try changing these settings next:

  • Settings > Brave Shields & privacy > Shred > Never

  • Settings > Brave Shields & privacy, disable
    Clear data on exit and Close tabs on exit.

That’s all I could think of that might cause this.

Yeah, both of those are disabled as well

You haven’t confirmed this: Settings > Brave Shields & privacy > Shred > Never?

Since it’s Samsung, it might be related to this bug which occurs after opening web links from external apps, using picture-in-picture mode:

I started having this same issue a few days ago. I have an Oppo Find X9 and Brave’s version is Brave 1.91.169, Chromium 149.0.7827.59.

However, it happens after a while of Brave not being open (haven’t timed it, but it seems like a couple hours at least), not just when closing and reopening it via sliding up to see recent apps and closing there.

I have disabled the “Homepage” option on Settings - Homepage as well as the “Shred” option is off.

@brakheart

You should check these browser settings (skip the one you can’t find):

  1. Settings > New Tab Page > Opening Screen > Last open tab;
  2. Settings > Brave Shields & privacy, disable
    Clear data on exit and Close tabs on exit;
  3. Also disable this if you don’t use it, sometimes the browser starts with the window which doesn’t contain the tabs you want:
    Settings > Appearance > Enable multiple windows

I think you may have solved it. How the heck did this get turned on with the last update?

It’s kind of an early access feature forced on selected users/devices in some recent brave updates. One of my family’s phones has it while another phone doesn’t.
They should have announced it on a big banner in the browser.

Indeed. That was the issue. For some reason that option enabled itself without my consent.

I have no early access option enabled. Why would i get this without any warning?

I don’t know. Weird decision from Brave devs, enable it by default for some of us users without any notice.

Here is the actual statement from a Brave employee:

This is just how I understand this situation. There’s no such thing as early access option.

@leh is correct here and this is something that most companies do all the time. I do apologize for the abruptness of it but just to clarify, this setting can be changed at any time as described above.

Went and tagged the post that was the solution for me.

Thank you everyone for helping me hold onto my last shred of sanity there.
