Brave browser has started locking up for 1-2 minutes about every 10 minutes. Doesnt seem to be any particular website causing the issue.
This has been happening for 3 days on my PC and started yesterday on my macbook
I havent been able to induce the lock up, I thought it might be youtube or reddit but even keeping them closed it will happen
I have been closing other applications on the PC and mac, generally the mac only has brave open so should be more reliable than the PC but same issue.
I thought it could be Nvidia drivers as I have been getting weird glitches visually on youtube.
I have tried deleting all cookies, history, caches. I tried a different profile on the mac as I have to anyway to resign into youtube. Similar issue of freezing on new profile on mac but havent tried on PC yet
Expected result:
Is this a known issue in the latest build?

Additional Information:
@Rangott thanks for reporting. Just to confirm does this happen on other browsers as well, or only with Brave?
It was even worse this morning before work. Ill try firefox tonight and see. I use chrome for a couple websites that dont work on Brave. I try to avoid using it otherwise.
Just thought it was weird it happens on both PC and mac, could it be some weird network issue?
I’ve also been having a problem with frequent (every few mins of browser use, assorted websites) Brave “freezes” (usually lasting several seconds, non-responsive window & title bar, “high” power/CPU usage per TaskManager; oddly YouTube audio & video usually continues while the window is otherwise frozen) which clearly started with Brave’s May 1, 2025 update. And continued with the May 7th update. I’ll likely keep updating and trying Brave, hoping the issue is resolved.
I’ve had to switch to another browser, such as Chrome (using the identical Chromium Version 136.0.7103.93 (Official Build) (64-bit) to Brave, as of May 11), or Edge (using its latest 136.0.3240.64 (Official build) (64-bit)) or Firefox, since Brave’s momentary freezes are too long and to frequent to live with.
I’ve tried uninstalling several Extensions and disabling every one of the remaining ones in Brave. I’ve tried disabling “Use graphics acceleration when available” (freezes either way). I’ve tried reinstalling Brave. I’ve tried deleting all Brave’s browser history & cached data. No diff/improvement with any of those.
I have Brave’s “Automatically send diagnostic reports” enabled, but I don’t know what telemetry Brave’s authors are seeing when I occasionally use (with freezes) then abandon it.
I’m running on a Win10 Pro PC 2009 19045.5737, with 64G of RAM. I haven’t made the leap to Win11 yet, maybe before the end of the year.
I have the same version of Brave running on another Win11 PC where it’s not exhibiting the freezes.
I am running a RAMDisk where I redirect browser temp files (same setup for for several years, for Brave, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, …)
Having already tried taking Brave to as bare-bones as I could make it (every extension disabled, caches flushed, assorted tweaks [disable GPU acceleration, etc.] tried) while Brave continued to freeze, I decided to try one last thing before becoming a permanent Chrome/Firefox user.
I created and started using a new Brave profile. I then did an export/import of all my bookmarks from my previous profile into the new profile, and then in the new profile only added a couple of essential extensions (e.g. a password manger, a YouTube ext). So far Brave’s constant freezes have stopped.
Despite that fix/workaround, I do regard this as a Brave bug. By my definition, a program freezing/crashing on data, including config settings, is a bug. I reserve the right to “corrupt” data in any way and I expect the program to work normally and complain and/or fix the data if appropriate, not silently accept the “bad” data and freeze.
Ok thats interesting. I will try creating a new profile tonight. I went so far as to completely reinstall windows on my main PC. I dont run any extensions at all.
Ive been using the Brave beta for a few weeks, it freezes less often but still freezes.
Thanks for the update, hopefully works for me
Seems to have fixed my issue. Its really weird that you can delete all history, caches etc and it wont fix the issue but a new profile and loading back in everything does. Even a complete wipe of my OS didnt fix the issue.
Most likely the bug is coming from the sync part of the browser
Glad it fixed your problem too. Hopefully Brave’s devs can use this to find and eliminate the root cause for all.
I can’t point to anything within the profile, but I will say that I’m NOT using nor have ever tried/enabled/activated Brave’s “Sync Setup” (sync settings across browsers on multiple computers) option.
And a Brave Settings search finds a few other “sync”, none of which I’m using (Wallet, passwords, etc.).
I can confirm, I have the same problem that started recently.
The Brave window just randomly freeze with all tabs and for a 15-20 seconds.
For example it happened several times while I tried to sign up to the community.
I ended up moving to the new profile and it seems to fix the issue (for now at least)
I’m happy to help with investigation since I still have that buggy profile.
I use latest stable macos and latest brave on macbook with M1 Pro chip.
Hello, I am also experiencing this issue on brave. What’s weird is that I was experiencing this exact same issue on chrome before making the switch to brave. It usually only happens when I am watching a video whether it be youtube, panopto, or facebook, I usually get the freezes for about 1 minute and then it unfreezes.
Windows 11
Ryzen 7600x
9070xt
will try new profile and report back.
