Brave glitching, with flares, unresponsive

Description of the issue: At times when I’m using Brave it randomly starts glitching with weird flares, flickering, and whiteouts on the screen. It’s unpredictable, so I can’t quite reproduce it.
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. It’s unpredictable, so I’m not sure.

Expected result: To function normally.

Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.86.142

Additional Information: I’m on MacOS, also Here’s a video

Been seeing exactly the same behaviour recently on a Mac. Can’t pinpoint exactly when it started, but likely within the past 2 or 3 weeks. OP posted 3 weeks ago.

Each time it has always started in the tab running Discord on the web. Interestingly, the OP has Discord open in a background tab during their example screen recording.

Closing and re-opening Brave allows normal browsing again.

How can this issue be reproduced? Haven’t yet been able to track any further patterns to reproduce on demand. It has only rarely occurred more than once every couple of days. Only once it may have occurred twice in a day.

Brave Version: 1.87.186

Additional Information:

macOS Sequoia 15.7.3

MacBookPro13,3 (Late 2016)

OS and Brave in running Dark Mode (unlike the OP), which is set by “Device” in Appearance settings.

“Use graphics acceleration when available” is enabled, and hopefully can remain enabled going forward. So far it has occurred when the MBP’s standard Intel HD Graphics chip is active and haven’t yet tried to test switching to its AMD graphics chip while its occurring.

hasn’t happened in the past week, pretty weird. So still haven’t been able to pin down a pattern.

@bezel021 , @aduseia ,

Please describe your Mac hardware, including the year and

Model Identifier ← example: MacBookPro11,1

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to: brave://gpu and take a screenshot of the Graphics Feature Status chart ← example:

Sure - added both in my original reply to the post. Let me know if I should also put them here.

Same here hasn’t happened for quite a while now on my side. Can’t say I counted the days, but I’d say at least several weeks.

@aduseia @bezel021 can we quickly just confirm whether or not disabling Graphics Acceleration resolves the issue or not (even if it’s not an ideal solution, will help us determine what’s causing the issue to begin with)?

I could try that, but it will be hard to attribute the solution to that, as I haven’t had the issue for some weeks now.

Where is that option and how long should I disable it?

In Brave go to brave://settings/system and you’ll see Graphics acceleration toggle there. Just test by browsing normally for a while – until you feel like the issue would have popped up again as it has been to the best of you knowledge.

After at least a week of the issue not happening, it just happened again a few minutes ago. Hardware acceleration was still enabled, so restarted Brave and disabled it. Will report back once it happens again, though same as the other user mentioned, given how long its been since the previous occurrence, I’m not sure of how effective this may be.

Switched Graphics Acceleration to disabled 10 days ago. Unfortunately during that time, a couple of reboots have been necessary along with restarting Brave (not as a result of the issue described in OP). So haven’t had more than a few days of Brave uptime to base the behaviour on. Since the issue last occurred with a week in between occurrences, I don’t think any conclusions can be drawn at this time.

Unfortunately the lack of graphics acceleration is causing excessive CPU temperatures under load which has been sustained for too long on this machine - will have to re-enable the setting to get things back to a more reasonable constant operating temperature.

Can someone else do that test with Graphics Acceleration disabled for a while?

The issue occurred again yesterday, 7 days after switching Brave graphics acceleration back on, though it had only been 3 days since the last machine restart.

That said, in the 10 days during which graphics acceleration was off, there were also some restarts of the machine and also of Brave, so I can’t definitively say whether having graphics acceleration disabled was the difference between the issue occurring/not occurring.

Unfortunately the thermal effects of having Brave’s GA disabled on this machine are hampering further more extensive testing.. hopefully someone else can assist with that.

@aduseia were you able to find that setting and how has the testing been?

I haven’t noticed anything myself. I turned it on and then turned it off again about 2 weeks ago. No issue as of the moment, so it’s too hard to say what’s causing it.

The issue hasn’t come up here recently, but the browser hasn’t been open for long periods uninterrupted due to the machine betting shut down/restarted for other reasons. Hardware acceleration still enabled.

Still pretty much this. Hopefully someone else is able to reproduce the cause/issue, unless its resolved.

Would help, to provide a thorough screenshot of the Brave Browser Task Manager window that displays column titles:

→ Task | Memory footprint | CPU | Process ID | Image cache | Script cache | GPU memory | JavaScript memory

When you add columns in the Brave Browser Task Manager window, they may not appear in the same arrayed order as in my screenshot ← not a problem.

For now, please skip any temptation to include Windows OS Task Manager.

Display all rows, all tasks:

Ok sure, will do when it next occurs. Those columns are added to the Task Manager in preparation thereof.
