Description of the issue: How can this issue be reproduced?
We actually use almost all the same filters as uBO. You can still use uBO in Brave – it looks like you even have it installed there.
That said, you’re right – that second extension does show up in the store so I’m not entirely sure what the reasoning behind this is. I’ve asked a couple team members to weigh in on why there’s no store link.
At any rate, you should still be able to use those extensions just fine in Brave.
But if I have to search for them (e.g. to re-install them in a different profile) it’s boring. Especially since already Chrome was offering that linking
@stdedos I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a website where uBlock Origin blocks content that Shields doesn’t. You’re also able to block content on the page much like you can with uBO. I’d be curious to hear on any specifics where you say there’s a difference.
Having any found sites reported helps make sure they get new filters and improvements out.
In regard to the extension URL, I am split on what to think. The section shown with the red square around it for Source also has no link if you check on Chrome. But where the difference does exist is a separate spot, as marked below:
Again, use almost all the same filters as uBO != uBO
uBo is much more than “just” a parser + applier of adblock rules.
I don’t mind where it is (actually you are right, even my 117 Chrome has the same image as yours).
As long as it exists
“Not much use nowadays”, yes/maybe - but it is a SIMPLE string transformation.
Having to find the Chrome Store URL, search for the extension (by manually typing stuff ofc - search does not accept cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm as input), making sure you selected the correct one …
Just to get a valid URL is a time-consuming ordeal compared to “just having” the button there
(… and pretty rare too, but still - it exist/ed)
Sorry for the late reply here. We actually shouldn’t be showing any of these links out to the web store from within the browser – I was incorrect in my initial assumption. So the bug is actually the fact that they appear at all.
@stdedos can you clarify as to why you want this link to be there?
Kind of curious why? This would be an intentional deviation from how Chromium works.
What they were referencing is that it seems any extension added to Brave doesn’t have a link to the Web Store for it. But on Chrome, it does.
They were originally pointing out the wrong thing in regard to Source, but Chrome has the one small section above to View in Chrome Web Store that Brave doesn’t.
I do kind of agree with this. There’s not a lot of use case for it. It’s easy to search on Chrome Web Store and all. I suppose if a person was trying to know the specific link to share with people, to go to leave reviews, or just to see if any updates were available…but those all seem niche.
One reason I could see being “why” we want to have the URL visible, is for security auditing. Where did the extension actually come from with a proper “source”? I feel for obvious security best-practices, it should be left in as Chromium does. Intentionally hiding it in my opinion is a bit…odd?
Searching and using that URL are not the same thing, what if a nefarious extension gets installed that claims to be Extension A, but is rather Extension B? That URL would help (if it’s actually “true” in that it properly says where the extension came from) determine a real extension to an imposter.
These used to be security best practices, which isn’t practiced as much anymore (hence so many security breaches).
when my question becomes: Can you pls NOT deviate from the existing behavior?
And basically I agree with @Saoiray’s points - apart from the “easy” part.
I could agree with the “niche”, partially, but explicit sources >>> “just try and search for it, it is there” - but this is also “Brave is removing a feature”
At least would work for any still available. That said, it is still some extra steps in terms of copying over, opening web store, and searching. Whereas if it had the button there it’s just one click to open and pull it up.
-NOTE-
In terms of uBlock Origin which is no longer available on Web Store, I could understand that link no longer being available. This is especially since it’s being hosted from Brave for future updates. But I know this is looking beyond just that and into all extensions.
