So ive recently bought new pc. As i found on forum i saved my user data folder. After installation brave on the new pc I pasted the folder to where it should be but the browser opens as fresh installed. Did I make a mistake and lost all my data?
Also, all of saved passwords have been imported without single problem
@parapapa I see in the title for your topic that is it mentioned it can’t read your User Data. And the first post along with that kind of follows and makes sense.
But where I’m a bit confused at this moment is the reply you made, which says all of your saved passwords have been imported without a single problem. Could you advise what it is that you’re saying is not being read or showing?
Wdym? All my data is in the folder and browser just ignores it i guess. And i imported sawed passwords, so passwords work completly fine, the rest dont
I think what he’s asking is whether or not your passwords appeared inthe browser after you replaced the User data folder or if you used the actual Import feature to import passwords that you’d previously exported.
@parapapa as Mattches said, I just wanted to understand which data you were saying did or didn’t show up and I suppose the overall circumstances. Replacing the User Data with the prior User Data should have had your bookmarks and some other details. Though if Brave was open when you replaced it, you’ll need to exit Brave completely and then open it for it to be visible.
But things like passwords would have been encrypted. So just replacing that User Data would not be enough due to it being on a new device. Meaning if the data you were referencing before was the passwords, I would have tried to tell you this was expected. But it seems this isn’t the issue as you had exported them and then went to import after.
no. im asking for help with user data folder. “did i make a mistake an lost all my data?”
i woke up, reinstalled brave again, succesfully imported my passwords but still cant recover the rest of the data. I have user data folder, i paste it where it should be but nothing happens. no bookmarks, no opened tabs, no cookies, no settings, no extentions
i swapped windows 10 for 11. maybe its the case
update.
somehow ive managed to make it work, but i still dont have all my opened tabs from the last pc, any way to recover it?
Your Brave (or chrome or other chrome-like browsers) user data folder is encrypted to your windows account, if you change it like you did, the new Brave installation won’t recognize your previous folder
i dont have any windows account ![]()
Honestly moving your User data folder around like that is shakey at best so the fact that you got it to work at all across OS versions should be considered a win.
Next time you move devices in this way I would highly recommend using Brave Sync instead.
You don’t have to insert a password or a PIN each time you start windows? If you do, you have an account/login/username. You must have, the user data folder is where many OS and program settings for your account reside.
