Both those urls open in my brave browser on MacOS, then freeze. I have to force quit using activity monitor in MacOS and restart brave browser when this happens. Problem occurs every visit to either of those urls. I have to switch to firefox to use either of those urls.
I’d like to know the cause of this problem and if there is anything I can do to fix it.
Control + Shift + "i" ("eye", no quotes) gets the Developer Tools > Network tab window
Control + Shift + "j" ("jay", no quotes) gets the Developer Tools > Console tab window
Or, use the F12 key ← also works for MacOS users.
On the first occasion of using Developer Tools, the Developer Tools “window” is usually a part of (contained within) its associated Brave Browser window . . . but you can make the Developer Tools window, a standalone window (though keeping its association with the Brave Browser window). I recommend that you do so:
In the upper right-hand corner of the Developer Tools window, there is an “Organizer” 3-vertical-dots button - click on that. The result should be a pop-up:
Notice the tiny blue icon that is first (left to right) among 4 that are to the right of “Dock side”. Click on that icon. The Developer Tools window will become a standalone window.
Thank you for taking the time to write such good notes for using developer tools windownt o hunt for the problem. Those are some outstanding pointers.
Applying what you mentioned about putting the Developer Tools window into stand along mode. I have not yet found what I need to find there to solve this problem using google maps. I neeed to put more time into the problem.
HOWEVER, I have now created a new problem. I have not been able to figure out how to reconnected the Developer Tools window to the place I am accustomed to finding it, stretching out from the right side of the browser main window. Can you possibly tell me how to reattach it? I would appreciate that a lot;
@fanboynz This is another area I need to put more into looking at. For sure hardware acceleration is active but I thoought I saw quite a few controls with separate adjustments that can be made on hardware acceleration; I need to experiment with it.I also need to make a new profile to see if that makes a difference
See the Using Developer Tools section that I posted, previously (above). Therein, scroll down to “In the upper right-hand corner of the Developer Tools window, there is an “Organizer” 3-vertical-dots button - click on that.”
Thank you. Will give theva try nextbtimebI an at my desktop computer. This fix, when it works, is very important to me. Not that I matter, I just want you to know your posting matters to at least one human being.

Notice the tiny blue icon that is first (left to right) among 4 that are to the right of “Dock side”. When you previously selected that icon, then the Developer Tools window became a standalone window.
You can select any of the 4 icons, in order to locate / situate where you want the Developer Tools window - anytime you wish.
this started happening within the last 2 or 3 updates to brave on macOS.
i have not updated the operating system or anything else, just the Brave app.
someone changed something that causes map rendering to lock up the browser completely. there’s no way to access developer tools while on google maps because it locks up the entire browser immediately.
disabling hardware acceleration in brave settings fixes the issue, so it has to be related to an update that was pushed that breaks hw accel on AMD GPU’s.
browsing without hardware acceleration is not really a solution.
how do I revert back to an older version of Brave?
i tried a multitude of versions going way back some 84 pages on the release list on the github of prior Brave Browser release updates.
They would self-close shortly after launch, so I got to about page 67 when 1.80.111 loaded, but the issue still persists with google maps crashing the browser.
so i just went back to the latest, and I let it sit on the google maps page with hardware acceleration enabled- and this is what eventually shows up in the console log. sometimes you can move the map, sometimes you can’t. sometimes it locks up over and over again.
sometimes you can close the window and open a new tab and continue browsing, sometimes it will continue to stutter and lock up frequently even after closing.
after every stutter, this list grows longer and longer with the same errors- so this seems to be a WebGL/Metal related issue. Perhaps specific to this RX580 card?
A) In a Brave Browser New Window, go to ‘brave://settings/shields’ and make note of the Block fingerprinting setting. (ENABLED / DISABLED)
B) Next, go to ‘brave://settings/system’ and make note of the Use graphics acceleration when available setting. (ENABLED / DISABLED)
C) Next, in a Brave Browser New Window, go to ‘brave://settings/content/v8?search=v8’ and look for the area of that page, where it says:
Default behavior Sites automatically follow this setting when you visit them
There should be 2 choices:
Sites can use JavaScript optimization
Don't allow sites to use JavaScript optimization
Make note of which of those 2 choices, is selected.
D) Next, in a Brave Browser New Window, go to ‘https://www.google.com/maps’ and, click on the Site Specific Brave Shields icon (the Brave Lion icon) nearby the right end of the Brave Browser window’s URL address field, and make note of the Block fingerprinting setting. (ENABLED / DISABLED)
Please report the position (ENABLED / DISABLED) where applicable for each of the settings switches, and, please report the button selected for 1 of the following:
i’ve not changed any of these settings and i am certain the hardware accel has been on for quite some time and i’ve browsed gmaps up until like a few days ago when it started acting up. i’ve turned off all extensions as well and tried- same thing.
previous post shows that it’s a webGL/metal error…
ok so if i go to google maps, the site does the whole freezing thing but if i wait like 60 seconds I can then move around the map, but in the the time it takes to get to that point, i see the following about once every 20 seconds.
if i disable/enable fingerprinting while on google maps, the same thing happens- so that’s not the issue…
here is what i found interesting though… if I leave it alone until it finally loads completely, and everything works… if i reload the page it loads and works immediately.
and in the console we get a new message about WebGL deprecation:
if i quit Brave completely, it has to go through the whole process again.
it seems like google maps is trying to use hardware WebGL, but then brave defaults to software WebGL after many attempts by google maps to load (i think?).
if I follow the console message instructions and “enable unssafe switfshader fallback”, it doesn’t fix the issue either. in fact, it seems like it takes almost twice as long to finally load to a working/movable map state.
In a Brave Browser (“BB”) New Window, go to: brave://settings/clearBrowserData . . . and there, select the Advanced tab. Set Time range to All time. ENABLE everything EXCEPT:
Passwords and other sign-in data
Autofill form data
Click on the Clear data / Delete data button. Exit / Quit everything and restart the computer. After the restart, and the computer has settled down, then start up Brave Browser.
Open a BLANK / EMPTY Brave Browser New Window, and for that window, open a Developer Tools window ← and click on that Dev Tools window’s Network tab.
In the blank, Brave Browser window, go to ‘https://www.google.com/maps’ and click on the Site Specific Brave Shields icon (the Brave Lion icon), and DISABLE the Block fingerprinting setting.
THEN look at the Developer Tools window to see how the messages may have changed.
so if i click the blue ‘reload now’ text on the error dialog while on google maps, that tab will always load the entire maps UI immediately if I refresh it- no matter how many times.
if i close the tab or the app entirely, then the whole issue starts from the beginning again with the 60+ second load time before I can actually move the map, but the UI is not really there, only a non-functioning search bar.
if i reload at that point, then the entire UI loads and I can use maps normally- as long as I don’t close the tab.
with respect and appreciation for your willingness to help, i don’t think this fingerprinting or whatever trail you are sending me on is going in the right direction to solve this issue; it is a webGL related problem and clearing my history and all the cookies i have saved for other sites that are not google specific is only going to cause me more problems.
what can we do to solve the webGL part that doesn’t involve ‘turning it on and off again’ style troubleshooting, because we’re passed that part already.
