Black Screen on Brave, can't even uninstall

**Description of the issue: When opening Brave, it opens the previous Tabs I believe, but the entire window is blac. When PRessing ALT + F, the menu appears, but nothing else. I can’t even unistall Brave because the unistall menu has the same problem. **
No clue, happened out of nowhere

Expected result:

Unable to ckeck

Any help is much appreciated.

Can you please try the following?

  1. Right-click on the Brave shortcut on your desktop
  2. Click Properties
  3. In the Target field after the last quotation mark, type in --disable-gpu and save the shortcut
  4. Launch Brave from the shortcut you just edited.

Let me know if the browser launches as expected here.

This actually worked. But I haven’t updated my GPU driver recently, or anything. Happened out of nowhere, during use actually. Will this lead to problems or will the functionality be compromised in any way now? Thanks in advance, you responded faster than lightning!

Btw, problem still persists when opening Brave via task bar icon or if I open it from install folder exe

@Rostam it depends on what you use the browser for. Most users will not notice any difference with Graphics Acceleration enabled/disabled but if you’re running graphics intensive/demanding sites in Brave (online games, for example), you may notice some performance differences.

Additionally, launch the browser from the shortcut, then go to Settings → System and toggle the Graphics Acceleration option “off” then relaunch the browser when prompted (from anywhere).

I’ve encountered exactly the same issue today - presumably there was a bug in today’s update?

Please take a look at Brave browser turned transparent and cannot be used or uninstalled - #69 by kamil . Basically check and ensure that brave://flags/#use-angle is set as Default.

It is set to “Open GL”, not Default:

”Choose ANGLE graphics backend

Choose the graphics backend for ANGLE. D3D11 is used on most Windows computers by default. Using the OpenGL backend is not supported and will likely exhibit rendering artifacts. – Windows”

Has this option been reset with the Update? I see that several people experience this problem recently. Just for clarification: disabling gpu or graphics acceleration both solved the problem. I just wonder if this will compromise functionality. Should I re-activite graphics acceleration and gpu in order to check whether your latest solution #use angle Default will solve the problem on its own?

As of now, this solution works, even after re-activiting graphics acceleration. I will wait to see if the problem reoccurs after a while. Thanks for your support.

Update like pipeline sabotage.

@trova @SerdarS following these steps should resolve the issue:

  • Launch Brave w/ --disable-gpu

  • Once inside, you can visit brave://flags/#use-angle

  • Change the value to Default

  • Restart Brave (without the disable GPU flag)

This solution only works to save the moment.

Think big: 90% of people won’t be able to do this and won’t know this is a temporary solution.

It shouldn’t be this difficult to issue a hotfix update immediately.

Take action.
This could be a serious loss of users, I think of you.

Brave window is blank. Tried to install/uninstall.. window is blank..

I think I found the exact source of the problem.

brave://flags/
Choose ANGLE graphics backend

If you set this to default, you don’t need to disable GPU and the browser works.

If D3D9 is selected, the browser doesn’t work in that setting.

Oh, damn it.
