An Error Occurred on Youtube during PlayBack

YouTube gives me an error like this when I play the video “an error occurred please try again later playback” the id is hqxdh3krcrjw_5qk and requires me to reload the playback page. Can this problem be patched or is it internal to YouTube?

Same here.

Website works with shields off

For now, until they fix it, here’s what you can do (and it works):

  • Tap the video you want to watch WITHOUT having the shields enabled.

  • Once the video is playing (after the initial ad), turn the shields back on, and the video will play correctly.

With this trick, you avoid watching ads while you wait for a solution. It works for me.

yeah same here its kept on doing this, io think youtube is fighting back

They introduced “Adblock-Only mode enabled” now. SO far, no issue. Will update in the future.

even with that on it doesnt work for me

Hi @nabilega532,
This is a known issue caused by recent changes to YouTube’s ad-delivery system, which temporarily breaks playback when interacting with Brave Shields.
It is completely patchable from your end. Here is the quick, proven fix to update your filter rules and resolve the error:
Open a new tab and go to: brave://settings/shields/filters
Scroll to the bottom, ensure your lists are active, and click Update filters.
Next, go to: brave://components
Locate Brave Ad Block Resources Library and click Check for update.
Restart Brave and refresh YouTube.
(Fix confirmed by Brave filter maintainer @fanboynz)

@retarge — try opening the video in a Private Window first. If it plays there, clear your browser cache:

brave://settings/clearBrowserData → Advanced → Cached images & files → Clear.

If still broken, what’s your Brave version? (brave://version)

Thanks, can confirm that following the steps in your last two posts worked for me.

it isn’t working with shield off, I don’t have ublock either

@LucaNoir — if Shields is completely off and it still fails, it means this is likely not caused by Brave’s blocking engine, but rather by a site-specific issue or a network conflict.

Hard refresh: Ctrl+F5

Clear cache: brave://settings/clearBrowserData → Cached images & files

Test in Private Window (Ctrl+Shift+N) to rule out extensions

What’s your exact Brave version? (brave://version)

1.90.124 Chromium: 148.0.7778.179 (Official Build) (64-bit)

@LucaNoir — thanks. This is the same build reported by multiple users experiencing playback issues.
Try: brave://settings/shields/filters → update all lists → restart Brave.
If still broken, report at github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues with your build details.

Yeah it works in private window but I cleared my cache and it didn’t work in my normal window still.

Brave 1.90.124 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium: 148.0.7778.179

@retarge — since it works in Private Window (where extensions are disabled by default) but not in your normal window, the issue is almost certainly an extension conflict.
Go to brave://extensions → disable all → restart Brave → test YouTube.
Then re-enable one by one to find the culprit.
If you find the extension causing this, please share its name here — helps others with the same issue.”
