All the problems with Hardware Acceleration Need to Get FIXED!

What the heck happened last month? The browser was running great and at some point one of the last two updates BROKE IT COMPLETELY. I’m on an eight-core desktop PC with 32GB or RAM and a Powerful RTX graphics card and browser spases-out non-stop until I disable Graphic Acceleration, but then even videos running at 360p run like a slide-show. Am having to go to Opera or Vivaldi, this is just unuseable at this stage. Whoever is coding WebGL needs to look this over again, and it is unexcusable to remove Vulkan from Windows - one of the best/most-proven apis there is.

Too Bad, was good while it lasted.

@artphotodude you test on Chrome and all? Keep in mind that over the past few months Chromium removed OpenGL. We’re now just limited to D3D11 and all under ANGLE. When this default changed, this would mean potentially needing to adjust graphics card settings.

And yeah, Vulkan had been removed prior to that.

Hey, I understand the frustration but we can work together to try and help make it better. I’ve been pushing for that today in fact, also about graphics acceleration, so I totally feel your pain there.

For all I know our issue could be the same, and I just got a bug report pushed today to finally start looking into it.

When you say “spases out”, what exactly is going on? For example, an issue I run into is the windows freezing, but once you move one, they unfreeze and flicker through frames to play “catch up”.

(I’m just a fellow user trying to help.)

The screen will go black, the text and rendering of the browser window will flicker and get soft-looking then sometimes disappear. It barely works at all. Turning off acceleration fixes this, but the video runs worse than an iBook from 1999 (around 5-7 fps).

I haven’t tried Chrome in years, but Firefox runs just fun at full-speed. Brave WAS working fine till about 4 weeks ago, and I’ve tried everything from disabling all extensions (I only have like 3), clearing caches and nothing fixes the problem. I’ve I have to totally clear my data and start over, will be on a different browser.

@artphotodude yeah, I asked about Chrome since it’s closer to upstream Chromium and is a good comparison to know if it’s a deviation on Brave itself or if the issue is indeed from that direction. As mentioned, I’m assuming it might just be the recent backend changes they made.

I’m not sure how much would be you needing to play with your graphics card settings (such as through NVIDIA Control Panel) for Brave, if you should try brave://flags to tinker with ANGLE and/or Skia Graphite to see if there are improvements, or if anything else to consider overall.

Beyond that just would be testing things like extensions and all. Such as to see if you have problems in a new browser profile (just as a test, not a permanent switch). Perhaps even checking via Brave Beta or Brave Nightly to see if it happens there as well.

Thanks for explaining the issue. By chance if you go to brave://gpu, what do you see both here:

I’ve had my own share of dances with my RX 7900 XT (and oddly not once with my 1080 Ti?), so I’ve become familiar with a few things.

I might have you try something that once fixed a LOT of flickering issues on my RX 7900 XT, but I want to see what your brave://gpu page results look like first. (Skia Graphite is what I had to enable in brave://flags to fix my flickering, but AMD and Nvidia usually have similar issues but different root causes.)

My card is Nvidia (RTX 2070 Super). When Accelleration is turned on, I have both the same setups. The funny thing, is also have Brave running in Linux and it is GREAT there (BECAUSE OF VULKAN!!!). There is no reason thease days to not have Vulkan. I use for everything that can it is always at least 40% faster and more stable than OpenGL. Thanks for the help guys. I have to assume this is a poison pill from some internal spies there working for Google Ads. Life is too short to watch Youtube with Ads.

You didn’t answer anything I just asked. I was going to help you, and even had a potential remedy which is to use Skia Graphite. If you aren’t willing to accept my assistance as a user like you, then you’re on your own. Besides, “Powerful RTX”, yet it’s a 2070 Super from 6 years ago. It was powerful then, it is not powerful now. Again that doesn’t matter, I had a 1080 Ti working just fine, and like I said, I’d have helped you but if you’re going to act like this, forget it.

Also, Brave uses Direct3D by default, or should be. Internally SKIA uses OpenGL but it is wrapped to be Direct3D. (On Linux it’s the same, wrapped to Vulkan, and I’m going to be real, Chrome as a whole with Vulkan on Windows is a complete mess, its why Brave doesn’t have it, and is why Edge doesn’t either, you’re blaming Brave for a decision Google chose.)

I AM SO SORRY for not having read your reply closer. IT WORKED GREAT!!! So I went with Skia Graphite and the D3D11 instantly improved (all text and web-chrome on the browser windows stabilized). Then tried with D3D11 WARPED and it improved further. Then as lark, tried it with D3D9 and it is like when I first put it on the browser! Here are the the two changes - see attached. I wonder if it is a question of the browsers priority in function calls as before it hardley worked even when it was the only thing running, and now it works even with HD video-rendering (via the GPU happending in the background - lots of things are probably making D3D11 calls all the time, but D3D9 is probably a bit on its own). THANKS - you all saved the Day!

Apology accepted, I am sorry myself if I come across hard. I’m not a Brave dev, just a user like you.

I am SUPER glad Skia Graphite worked.

Do keep in mind, D3D9 will use your CPU to decode videos as that is a feature of D3D11 to have GPU accelerated video decoding. However, since you enabled Skia Graphite, the ANGLE backend setting has no effect as seen here. (Also a warning about D3D9, while faster, GPU vendors haven’t been optimizing their drivers for D3D9 in probably at least 8-10 years now. Remember when Intel Arc first shipped? lol it bombed at older games because it had NO D3D9 and under optimizations.)

(Also, keep in mind, Skia Graphite gets overidden if the Angle Backend is on anything other than Default or D3D11. Skia Graphite doesn’t work with D3D9 or D3D11 WARP. In addition to that, you likely don’t want to actually use D3D11 WARP, because that is a CPU/software based renderer which emulates a GPU, so again a burden on your CPU.

Your best bet is leave ANGLE on Default, but have Skia Graphite enabled. That completely ensures your CPU isn’t forced to do things your GPU should be doing, leaving the CPU completely free for the actual work, HTML/Javascript parsing.)

For me personally my only flags set are:

Graphite for the reasons in your post (but it has been solved for my 7900 XT so I don’t need Graphite anymore, but I found Graphite to scroll smoother).

(Don’t use scRGB as a color profile like me, I’m a special use case due to using a 30-bit SDR desktop with a wide gamut display, on top of that, using “Automatic Color Management” in Windows 11, which is what enables 30-bit SDR mode on supported GPU’s. And funny enough, the ability to play HDR YouTube videos in SDR mode, because my monitor IS in 10bpc mode, just no HDR lighting is available but the colors absolutely are, so this is a special case, leave yours on Default.)

EDIT: Oh and if you are a tinkerer like me with flags, don’t enable TreesInViz. Yes, it absolutely is a game changer in performance, but also yes, it absolutely is unstable. Only when you want resize a window that is (your page crashes with “Oh snap!”) so that isn’t ready. But I can’t wait for it to be ready. lol

@MasterLink

A new “space race” is developing / emerging - each contender possesses (or will possess) its own hi-tech set of:

  • AI
  • GPU
  • Internet browser
  • Search Engine

(I figure that set solves browser issues.)

Contenders and possible entries:

  • Amazon
  • Apple
  • Baidu (China)
  • Google
  • Meta (Facebook)
  • Microsoft
  • Nvidia
  • Yandex (Russia)

And, dependence on Google Chromium will be a burden / handicap ← because: “browser issues”.

Reliance on, and ties to the GPU, will grow ← I imagine that helps to reduce “browser issues”.
