All passwords and logins gone

I woke today to find all my passwords and logins gone, these are more than 100 login details that i have accumulated over the years, i have not changed anything on my computer, am very disappointed with Brave and this has cost me a lot since this is my work laptop, i am permanently moving to another browser.

I’m not going to add a new topic. Basically, the same thing happened to me this morning. Logged out at 1am and woke up this morning to new, clean brave browser. I didn’t lose passwords and logins because due to years of experience, I have always avoided using a browser for password saving.

What I lost (would have included passwords if…) was all bookmarks and extensions. It is painfully obvious that it was a result of Brave update to 1.85.111. I have read through posts related to this problem going back to 2018. I’m 75 and not going to go through the hassle of digging up all of the basics and slogging through all of the maybe-this-will-work solutions that Brave requires to document this problem that has lasted at least 7 years.

If you have a solution that will actually recover my bookmarks, I’m all ears, but I am not happy. If you have a solution that would go back to the previous version, recovering anything that was lost, I’m all ears. 7 YEARS!!! Extremely disappointing. Unbelievable!

sorry about that, luckily you did not loose your passwords, am beyond disappointed at this point, i cannot find a solution and honestly i do not have the time to look through all the threads, i would rather move to another browser and start from scratch with the logins, am surprised this would happen with a seemingly good product like Brave, this is very detrimental to anyone who has experienced it, unfortunately all my password were saved in Brave. I am not using this browser ever again, the damage is catastrophic for me

Tips for Windows OS users:

Mid-day and at the end of the day, create Windows OS System Restore Point.

End of the day, make a chronologically-named backup of the User Data folder:

C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\

End of the day, make a chronologically-named backup of:

  • bookmarks
  • passwords

so i need to create a restore point in Brave so as not to loose my passwords? what about my previous passwords and logins? gone? Lame, even Netscape Navigator had a better system back in the day

I had the very same problem until I kept changing profiles and found the ā€œworkā€ profile to be the one I use with my information.

I have 42 different Brave profiles - I couldn’t imagine losing them.

Can everyone in here with an issue of the passwords and logins being gone please fill out the required template? No one’s mentioned what OS they are running so we’re going to assume Windows for now.

I’m tracking an issue with Microsoft about clock problems, which may be causing issues with Kerberos authentication, namely on Windows 10/11, and Brave (along with anything Chrome based) do use Kerberos to encrypt those saved passwords and logins. Currently we have no evidence the cause is a timing issue, but you few might be able to help here real quick.

Can everyone with the issue for me just check time.gov and see if your clock drifted? (Seconds aren’t an issue, we are talking a minute or more).

This section is what I’m particular wanting to know, what does it say ā€œYour clock is off by:ā€?

As for getting the data back, because it’s encrypted by DPAPI, your only choice is likely what @289wk recommended. Windows itself encrypted it, not Brave, but Brave did request Windows to do it, so System Restore would be your closest bet.

(If you are not on Windows, then this would be helpful data for me as well, as it would be disproving Kerberos as the failure since only Windows really uses that with Chromium as far as I know.)

I won’t use a browser to save my passwords or logins, so I have no issue there. As far as bookmarks, I had a backup from 7 months ago and brought in any new folders that were missing. But, honestly, this same problem has been reported for over 7 years, seemingly centered around updates. If no roll-back can be applied, why not a warning before an update takes place to suggest backing up certain files or folders. I do use Win 11, but I have seen the same issue over the years coming from different OS and platforms.

Thank you so much, this worked for me too!

Thank you. It disproves my idea regarding the time drift, but I am glad to rule it out. Wanted to just narrow down the simple things first.

I’ve done some research, and it seems some Edge users were also this year having password issues (identical nearly to the T), so I’m starting to wonder if there’s something Chromium side.

A couple of users had noticed their stuff moved to another profile, even if they didn’t make one themselves. By chance is there another profile in Brave that wasn’t there before? Some said theirs was called ā€œworkā€ but I assume the naming could be anything.

There is a work profile. It was created when I first installed Brave, so basically a backup but 7 months old - never used it. Therefore it had the bookmarks from 7 months ago for me to rebuild to be current (or at least to the point that this old mind remembers - anything I don’t remember, I guess I won’t be missing…). Profiles 1 & 2 were empty.
