Zoom functionality in Brave Browser becomes unresponsive and resets incorrectly after specific zoom sequences (reverts to 0% and locks)

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:

The zoom functionality using the + and – buttons in the “Aa” menu of Brave Browser on iOS works initially but becomes highly unstable, snappy, and buggy after certain sequences. I can zoom inward (using -) all the way to 50% without issue. From 50% I can then zoom up to 100%, but the transition is snappy and feels buggy. Once I reach 100%, trying to zoom in further with the - button becomes unreliable: I can barely get the zoom to move before it immediately jumps back to 85%. Any attempt to zoom back in after that resets the level straight to 100% every single time. The + and – buttons no longer respond consistently, and the zoom level keeps snapping between 50%, 85%, and 100% instead of staying where I set it. This only happens with the + / – buttons in the “Aa” menu (pinch-to-zoom gestures are not involved). This is accessed in the website/webpage settings not the general settings.

How can this issue be reproduced?

1. Open the Brave app on your iPhone and load any webpage (e.g. google.com or wikipedia.org).

2. Tap the “Aa” icon in the address bar to open the zoom settings menu.

3. Use the – button to zoom out all the way down to 50%, this works normally.

4. From 50%, use the + button to zoom back up to 100%, this succeeds but is snappy and buggy.

5. Once at exactly 100%, tap the + button (to zoom in further, e.g. toward 110% or higher).

6. Observed: The zoom level barely changes or immediately jumps back to 85% when trying to zoom back out using the - button. Repeated taps of the + or - button (or attempts to zoom back in or out) cause the level to reset straight to 100% every time. The – and +buttons may also become erratic after this point. They completely become uncontrollable.

7. Further attempts to adjust zoom continue to snap unpredictably between 50%, 85%, and 100% with no stable control.

Expected result:

Zooming in and out using the + and – buttons in the “Aa” menu should be smooth, responsive, and stable at every step. The zoom level should stay exactly where it is set at (including transitions through 50% → 100% → higher percentages) with no snapping, jumping to 85%, or automatic resets back to 100%.

Brave Version: 1.88(137):

Device: iPhone 17 Pro Max

Brave for iOS: Developer 26.4 Beta

Tested with default Brave settings (Shields on Standard or Aggressive), hardware acceleration enabled, and no third-party extensions or VPNs active. Reproducible in both portrait and landscape orientation, with or without Low Power Mode. The bug occurs only when using the + and – buttons inside the “Aa” zoom menu (not pinch-to-zoom).

Additional Information:

  1. 100% reproducible (10/10 attempts) on a clean Brave profile.
  2. The instability is specifically triggered after the 50% → 100% sequence and then attempting to zoom in further with the + button.
  3. No JavaScript console errors (when viewed via desktop remote debugging); the bug lives in Brave’s iOS WebKit/Chromium zoom engine.
  4. Workarounds: None reliable, must force-quit the app to temporarily reset zoom behavior.
  5. Video reproduction (screen recording showing the “Aa” menu, exact button taps, and the snapping/jumping between 50%/85%/100%) and device logs available if needed.
  6. This makes the built-in zoom controls almost unusable for adjusting readability or accessibility
